The Academy Awards ceremony has been officially known as the Academy Awards since 2013. This is when the producers rebranded the broadcast with a shorter name, referring to the golden statue, to get away from the longer title. In the past, live shows have been named in relation to their year, such as the 85th, 89th, or 92nd annual Academy Awards, which showrunner Neil Moran said at the time “somehow sticks.” The short, catchy title takes front and center on Oscar’s iconic statue. However, it is truly representative of the best achievements in motion pictures, as determined by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

No one is sure how the name originated, but it was adopted as the official name for the statue in 1939. The sculptor, George Stanley, created the three-dimensional, iconic and instantly recognizable figure you see today. An interesting design features a male figure, undeniably muscular, with a pointed neck. The film reel was replaced with a black base, and the design originally had five sides to represent the Academy departments (actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers). The sculpture has the appearance of liquid gold, but the finish is 24-karat plate – not gold. The Academy was launched way back in 1929 and the first ceremony set the stage for an evening full of glamor and glitz. It was held in the Bloom Room at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, and the winners were announced in advance, unlike the secret ballots that are shown live on television today. There were only two Best Actor nominations, both for two films. The Best Actress category was tied with three nominees, but the winner, Janet Gaynor, was nominated for her performance in three different films. Best Picture, Best Picture, was named Best Picture in 1929 before a series of changes until it officially became Best Picture in 1962. The first prize was awarded to a silent film.
