And Another One Biggie

And Another One Biggie – For those of us who religiously bought and read the original magazine in the nineties, we always remember the forgotten but long-awaited “Unsigned Hype” column. In 1992, this column introduced rap fans to a hidden gem named Biggie Smalls (taken from a 1975 movie character). As a result of that column, Uptown Records got wind of the rapper and set up a meeting, then signed Smalls to Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs’ label. Before anything happens at Uptown, Puffy is fired from the label and sets out on his own to start “Bad Boy Records”. BIG is also leaving Uptown and signing with a new label.

The following year, 1993, we hear his solo “Party and Bullshit” and a guest appearance on several tracks to the remix of “Flava in Ya Ear” with LL and Busta. While Big was still getting his feet wet in the industry, 1994 would change everything. Not only did he release his debut single, “Ready to Die,” he changed the entire New York rap scene with it. BIG’s album has the perfect balance of easy-to-understand stories from the streets, smooth beats and a delivery and flow that was (and still is) unmatched in the industry.

Let’s take a closer look at the album that made Biggie a legend. It is still one of the greatest albums in hip-hop and is the album that gave Bad Boy the fame he has today. We first look at the production and then go track by track with the rating and best verses/bars as well as the album’s strengths, weaknesses and overall album rating. Let’s get into it.

There are some producers on this album, DJ Premier, Puffy, Easy Mo Bee, Poke, Bluez Brothers and a few more, so the use of examples is plentiful. While each producer made sure to bring their own expertise and style, each made sure to keep BIG’s rhymes and flow at the forefront, making their lyrics stand out and making track after track memorable. They worked together to make this perfect timeless album.

This is easily the best, most vivid intro on any album, and thus begins the imagery and storytelling. From his birth in the first verse to his eventual incarceration, each takes us through a milestone in Big’s life with Curtis Mayfield, the Sugar Hill Gang, and some other great role models. For an album titled “Ready to Die,” this is a great way to start. 10/10

I absolutely love the beat and sample choice on this track as it lends itself well to BIG’s high energy and fits the content well. He takes us through the evolution of the “street” lifestyle and how it’s changed (“So get away with your fist-fighting ways”). Similes and metaphors abound and imagery is appreciated. -10/10

Best Lines: “If I wasn’t in the rap game I’d probably be knee deep in the crack game ’cause the streets is a short stop or you play crack rock or you got a mean jump *** it’s hard being young from the slums”

If you ever doubted Biggie’s talent, this should put all doubts to rest. It’s a duel between “two people” in an elaborate plot to commit a robbery (which BIG was familiar with from his real life). While the whole song is a big rap, he changes his voice to give a second person impression which works well. The entire song engages the listener with incredible wordplay and references. 10/10

While not my favorite song on the album, it’s a great example of BIG’s flow. From the moment he drops the first verse to the end, his rhyming is flawless and the way he ties the last word in each bar with a distinct drum beat makes his lyrics pop. The sound effects, the chorus/hook make it listenable. 9/10

Best Lines: “Now I’m rhyming, fuckin’ crimes come now, now I’m so hard to find ’cause I’m knee deep in beats in a Mach-10 Jeep Land Cruiser For jacks through the seats, in jealous a** crackers–*cheeses* “

Set like “Gimme the Loot”, it’s done as dialogue, but a little brighter and more violent. Again, this shows how perfect BIG’s narration is as he takes us through the story of the plot to kill him. It starts at “5:46 am” and ends with “hearing someone coming” and some gunshots. It’s fast and short, but to the point, and the accented drum sounds set the scene well for this kind of story. It’s one of the highlights of the album and an instant favourite. 10/10

Best Lines: “I throw hardcore C4 no beef to the door too f****** I feel the rush I feel the scandal I spit more weed smoke I don’t care about you or your weak team when Big Poppa come for you what you doing

Rappers That Collaborated With Michael Jackson

The title track and another manifestation of BIG’s “don’t care” attitude. It’s the most emotional we’ve ever felt. The lyrics are angry, sad and (in retrospect) pretty weird. Even though it’s not one of my favorites, I think this album needs a song with that kind of feeling from BIG. He goes through everything he has done and is willing to do anything. Reckless ambition is ruthless and we see that here. 8.5/10

Best lines: “My grave is deep, deeper than my grave / I’m ready to die and nobody can save me / Damn the world, damn my mothers and my girl / My life’s been a whirlwind / Ready I’m going to die”

And Another One Biggie

This is probably my second or third favorite song in all of hip-hop, so I have nothing wrong with it. I really love the method of recording voice messages in the intro, it was like nothing at the time. While rappers have always talked about women, sex, and partying, no one has ever rapped this with such poise and confidence, even though the lyrics are incredibly vulgar at times. The simplicity in the background beat and chorus makes BIG’s lyrics shine. This is a highlight of the album. 10/10

Puff Daddy Announces Bad Boy Family Reunion Show For Biggie’s Birthday

Best Lines: “I love it when they call me Big Poppa, I only smoke dumb if they turn the right look, I’m caught in a stream of booze **** crazy, they picked me”

And Another One Biggie

That’s what you’d expect from an interval with this title. The placement is appropriate given that we’re hearing a song about sex and women, but it’s a bit much and the fact that it’s not on the track list doesn’t take anything away from the album, so it’s a bit redundant and pointless for me. 3/10

Here’s How New York City Plans To Celebrate Biggie Smalls’ 50th Birthday

The only song on the album that has a guest appearance and it’s none other than Method Man. Wu had just released 36 Chambers in 1993 and was instrumental in the emergence of “gangster rap” in New York, so BIG did himself a favor by including meth. It’s no secret that several Woo members didn’t like Big much, so this might be a bit of a “slap” for them. As for the song, it’s great. Method Man’s flow is just as smooth and buttery as Biggie’s, and the way these two deliver verses is seamless. 10/10

Best Lines: “Biggie Smalls bad your style Arnold and ‘What you talkin’ about Willis?'” The thrill is gone, black Frank White get excited and drop the f*** on the dikes Bitches, I like mindless guns, I like stainless steel ” If that’s not happening you’re next and I’m crazy to touch something yo I’m from Shaolin the island and I’m not afraid to break something so what do you want f****** punk n** **”

And Another One Biggie

It’s the most upbeat and powerful banger on the entire album and another story from BIG’s life, only this time it comes with a ton of positivity and power. From the intro/dedication to every verse and chorus, BIG talks about his rags to riches life. He celebrates his success and lets listeners celebrate with him. This is an important point
