Still, looking back, no rap artist has had a greater impact on the 2000s decade than Outkast. It starts with “Stankonia”, the most critically acclaimed rap album of 2000 and the most progressive.

“Stankonia” made Andre 3000 and Big Boi mega stars. It made them the biggest and most creative rap group of all time. But it would take a few more years to understand the true genius of the album and its bombastic pre-9/11 political message.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Stankonia”, Sony Music Entertainment is re-releasing the album through the Vinyl Me Please record club. We decided to take on a monumental task of ranking every official Outkast song, from 1994’s “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” to 2006’s “Idlewild.”
But first, let’s define what an “Outkast number” is. Mixtape cuts do not count. Not even on solo releases from Big Boi and Andre 3000. All songs from Outkast’s six studio albums were decent. The same goes for new songs from the group’s 2001 greatest hits compilation, as well as soundtracks that Outkast headlined.
Outkast Speakerboxxx: The Love Below (4 Lp) Vinyl Record
It should come as no surprise that many of the songs at the bottom of this list come from “Idlewild”, an Outkast album yes, but also the soundtrack to Big Boi and Andre 3000’s movie of the same name. fairly and unfairly maligned. As a standalone collection of music, “Idlewild” is disappointing. But the songs make for truly amazing cinematic moments in a hit-or-miss movie. These moments are far too few and far between.
“Dracula’s Wedding” is the weirdest song on Andre’s “The Love Below,” which says something. Dre certainly wasn’t lacking in ambition on his half of the duo’s hugely successful double album. But “Dracula’s Wedding” works as a concept record that doesn’t really make much sense, except that Andre might have had an idea that he couldn’t execute at the time.
Hip-hop spawned its fair share of chilling songs about women in the early 2000s. Even Outkast has songs that just don’t fit into the Me Too movement. “We Luv Deez Hoez” is one of them. Even if you look at it in the context of its time, it’s just not very good. The hook almost sounds like a parody of a misogynistic club song, which it might be.

Even the worst track on Outkast’s southern rap classic “Aquemini” has its appeal. The verses on “Mamacita”, including the opening lyric from Dungeon Family member Masada, are spot on. But ‘Mamacita’ contains perhaps the worst fragment of Outkast’s career. It also doesn’t help that the song goes on and on.
Andre 3000 captures more of the failure of “Idlewild” as the album and film are credited to his creative vision. Still, Big Boi’s songs aren’t much better. One of the biggest problems with “Idlewild” is that the duo kept sharing their talents for an album. Separated again, they’re less convincing than on “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.”
The transition from Big Boi’s “Speakerboxxx” to Andre 3000’s “The Love Below” is shocking to say the least. After “The Love Below (Intro)” we get “Lover Hater”, a jazzy song with no raps in it. It is clear that the listener is onto something else. Three Stacks would carry that vibe everywhere.

Outkast’s debut album ‘Southernplayalisticaddillacmuzik’ was released in April 1994. The next thing we heard from the duo was ‘Phobia’, a song on the ‘Higher Learning’ soundtrack. The song about racial stereotypes is raw and sounds older than anything Outkast released on their debut (the song was recorded in 1994). Still, there’s something fun about hearing a young Andre and Big Boi, especially the latter using a Scarface-esque version of the chorus.
It may come as a surprise to some to realize that Outkast has been featured on several soundtracks. Perhaps the duo’s most famous soundtrack was “In Due Time” from the “Soul Food” soundtrack. It’s the video that appeared between the release of “ATLiens” and “Aquemini.”
Outkast’s 2001 greatest hits compilation featured three new songs and they were all good. “Movin’ Cool” is a laid-back song featuring vocalist Joi that would reference some of Andre 3000’s work on “The Love Below” and “Idlewild”.
Best Outkast Songs Of All Time
“ET” can’t help but stand out on “ATLiens,” an album that was the first sign of Outkast’s ability to experiment. The beat never drops. Some listeners may have asked for it, but Andre and Big Boi’s verses are more than enough to keep you enthralled.
This is probably a bit low for “Toilet Tisha”, one of the most memorable parts of Outkast’s career. “Toilet Tisha” is the end of “Stankonia”. the subject is both ambitious and poignant – about a pregnant teenage girl who commits suicide. Yet the sonic accompaniment of distorted electronic sounds often distracts from the gripping story. However, that doesn’t stop ‘Toilet Tisha’ from becoming a fan favorite.
In the only traditional rap song on “The Love Below,” Andre 3000 goes over 5 minutes in full story mode. Anyone who was disappointed with the musical direction of the rest of the album probably wanted more (much more) of this from Dre.
Roses Pt.1 (2 Tracks)
“Benz or a Beamer”, Outkast’s song from the “New Jersey Drive” soundtrack, was also the group’s fourth music video. It was a clear sign that Outkast had made it as Benz or Beamer was directed by Hype Williams, whose career exploded at the time after directing videos for LL Cool J, The Notorious B.I.G., Montell Jordan and others.
In hindsight, we should have seen ‘The Love Below’ coming. Andre predicts that on “I’ll Call B4 I Cum,” a song that would fit perfectly on his half of the duo’s double album. However, since the song was on “Stankonia”, it benefits from rap verses from Big Boi, Gangsta Boo and Eco.
“Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik” has an intro titled “Peaches.” But Big Boi and Andre 3000 wanted to make their first lyrical statement on the album’s second track. “Myintrotoletuknow” is a fiery display of raw lyricism that proves the South really had something to say.
Striking Stories In Outkast Songs That Will Make You Run It Back
“Mighty ‘O'” is Idlewild’s ultimate plague. The song was not a musical number from the movie “Idlewild”. Nevertheless, it was the lead single and first full-length song on the soundtrack. And it’s a solid record, leading fans to (erroneously) believe they’d be getting some vintage Outkast on an album that would ultimately be the group’s last.
If Andre 3000 had taken more time with the sounds of “The Love Below” or even shortened the track list, it could have been something really special (some would argue it already is). You listen to a song like “Valentine’s Day”, clearly influenced by Prince, and you understand what Dre was going for with the sultry pop sound and catchy funk guitar riffs.
The second half of “Stankonia” does not contain the hit songs that the first half does. But it is quite impressive in its musical ambition. No other hip-hop group attempted things like “Humble Mumble,” “Slum Beautiful,” or “Toilet Tisha.” And it all culminates in the title track, a love song dripping with Hendrix-esque experimentation that absolutely sweeps you away for its nearly seven-minute running time.

“Stankonia” showed that Outkast had reached a new pinnacle in hook writing. In fact, the duo pretty easily make it look like “The Whole World,” the single from the 2001 greatest hits collection. The song was also one of the first mainstream hits with Killer Mike, highlighting Outkast’s most talented protégé with lines like “I catch the beat running like Randy Moss.”
Outkast actually had no choice but to release ‘Roses’ as a single. It’s one of the catchiest songs on “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” and features an even mix of both Big Boi and Andre 3000. “Roses” delivers on their shared vision. The beat is pure Big Boi, while the vocals and chorus are a Three Stacks classic.
The first song on the biggest album of Outkast’s career at the time is a rock song. It’s crazy to think about. Despite their huge success, Big Boi and Andre 3000 had no interest in satisfying fans with the first full-length track that kicks off their epic fourth album. Instead, “Gasoline Dreams” serves as a political wake-up call. If you didn’t know, this was a different kind of hip-hop group.
