We met with John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, the new Senate leader and the President. They’re pretty much saying the same thing. Since these are the last two years of his presidency, this is his chance to put his stamp on the American economy, which he has not yet done.
As for the Republicans, they clearly know that now that they are in control of Congress and thinking about the 2016 presidential election, they need to prove that they can govern. Each side has different motivations, but the outcome is favorable to the United States, because we all agree that the United States should continue to grow its economy.
We are the best performing economy in the world in relative terms; but given our historical growth rate, we are still underperforming. A few weeks ago, I met the President in China and had a personal conversation with him there. I think they are serious about working with other parties. It’s going to be a skill set we haven’t shown yet, but I’m optimistic that we can make something happen at this conference.
