8. In his first year as a father, Samberg said, “It was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Why did he prepare to be a father? “Working on SNL trained me well for the lead role. The part about going to bed where you like, ‘Oh, right – this is it.’ But it’s less stressful because the baby won’t wake up at 11:30.

What is a sports comedy? “I’ve always been a sports fan,” Samberg said. “I grew up playing sports and watching sports, I love sports, so I’ve watched a lot of sports documentaries — I love the tone of them. And the second is that I love comedies about machismo and male aggression and competition, and maybe I can relate to that, and those things get a lot of laughs. I hope so!”

Samberg was born on August 18, 1978 in Berkeley, California. He grew up in a middle-class Jewish family with his father, photographer Joe Samberg, and his mother, elementary school teacher Margie Samberg. He attended Willard Junior High School in Berkeley, where he met two of his best friends, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Shaffer. Together they created and performed off-the-wall comedy sketches to entertain their friends and colleagues. According to Shaffer, his work at the high school has a meaningful purpose. “It’s important to have a sense of humor,” he says. “Better unpunished.”
The trio continued to attend Berkeley High School, but split up for college when they graduated in 1996. Samberg initially followed Shaffer to the University of California, Santa Cruz, but after a year transferred to New York University to study film. The Northern California resident says she was shocked at first.
Samberg lived with three friends in a two-bedroom house infested with rats. “There were mice and rats everywhere,” he recalls. “I grew up in the Bay Area, so I’ve always loved nature, but this is different. The nature in California is beautiful. The nature in New York is disgusting. At first I was really mad.” However, Samberg moved to Manhattan and graduated from NYU in 2000 with a BFA in film.

In 2001, after all three had graduated from college, Samberg, Schaefer and Taccone reunited in Los Angeles. Shaffer recalls, “After college we got back together and moved to L.A. and lived in an apartment. And the people living in the apartment were given a name—we were called ‘The Lonely Island.'” The folk comedy group was named “The Lonely Island” after their house. was given
Armed with just a video camera, the trio began making short comedy sketches – which they called “shorts” – and posted them online. Taccone recalls, “We put our stuff [online] when there was nothing to do… We were using our [digital] shorts as an excuse to do nothing.”
Their comedic digital shorts, which included underground hits such as “White Power,” “For Andy” and “Awesometown,” soon became popular on the Internet, and in 2005 they invited the trio to write for the MTV Movie Awards. That year’s host Jimmy Fallon was so impressed with all three writers that he decided to join them.

After their debut in 2005, Island Digital shorts, such as “Iran So Far Away,” “Lazer Cats” and “Lazy Sunday” became popular on SNL. Samberg rose to national fame in 2007 when he worked with Justin Timberlake.
