No one is better qualified to explain the origins of Hamburg’s street names than 80-year-old retired horseman Preston Madden. Describing him as “the greatest horse that ever lived”, he still remembers the time “Will Harbutt took me and sat me down” on Man O’War’s groom.
Madden is the heir to one of horse racing’s most famous families. His grandfather, John E. Madden bought an antebellum Hamburg in 1896 for $1,200. He invested Hamburg’s profits and sales in the farm and breeding operations that would become Hamburg Place on Winchester Road.
Today, Sir Barton Way is Hamburg’s main thoroughfare between Winchester Road and Man O’War. (When the Hamburg Journal opened 15 years ago, Sir Barton was sparsely populated and served as everyone’s favorite quick shortcut to downtown via Winchester Road. Times have changed.)

I think she did a great job. My grandfather bred 100 stakes winners. He had a list of over 100 stakes winners – Sir Barton, the first Triple Crown winner, and Alysheba were obvious choices, so he took the winners and my winners.

The Maddens transformed Hamburg Place into the thriving commercial corridor it is today, but Preston always knew he wanted to carry on the family legacy. Back in elementary school, he told his classmates he wanted to breed a Kentucky Derby winner.
Desperate for Garland of Roses to regain a feat that Hamburg Place had not enjoyed since winning the Flying Ebony Derby in 1925, Preston took a chance on the Vegas Vic in 1971 and the Kentuckian in 1972. The Vegas Vick finished sixth, while the Kentuckian finished 10th. Then Alysheva came.
Preston bred Alisheba and sold her as a yearling to Dorothy and Pam Scharbauer for $500,000. And in 1987, Alisheba got a third chance at a Derby winner when she entered the starting gate at Churchill Downs.

Alysheba’s legs buckled after Bett crashed twice at the top of the stretch, and it looked like Preston’s mission would again end in disappointment. But Alisheba and jockey Chris McCarron recovered to complete the final run, with Bett twice out for the win. Watching the race from a balcony overlooking the track, Preston and Anita fainted.
“My wife was on my right. “It was clear even before the final that Alisheba was going to win,” said Preston. “This is the third time we’ve run in the Derby, and I’ve been trying my whole life to win this race, so when people ask me what I thought when he crossed the finish line, I tell them the real story.
