Battery life is one of the main features most consumers want to improve on their new phone, even ahead of slim designs and faster processors. Ironically, longer battery life doesn’t sell more phones, while other more visible features certainly do. To be fair, we’ve tested dozens of phones over the past few years, with very few having terrible battery performance. But what is good and what is not in today’s market?

Smartphone Battery Life Tested: Is A Big Battery Enough?
The performance floor seems to be around five hours, where phones like the OnePlus 5 and LG G6 are. Like most tests, it supports a large battery and small display, so the Xiaomi Mi 6 performs very well.
Larger phones — those with 5.5-inch or larger displays — that don’t opt for larger-than-average batteries tend to perform at lower levels. The end result is something like choosing the Xiaomi Mi 6 over the OnePlus 5 can provide 85% more battery life.
Our second Wi-Fi browsing test is less intensive and more accurately reflects “real world” web browsing scenarios. There’s a bit of a mix at the top end, with the Mate 9 taking the lead over the Mi 6, but the likes of the LG G6 and HTC U11 still trailing. The average score for this test is around eight hours, so phones like the G6 don’t fare well.
How To Boost Your Smartphone Battery Life
Switching from Wi-Fi to 4G LTE in the same test negatively affected the battery life of every phone in our test group, except for the Huawei P10, which still equaled the Wi-Fi score. However, the general performance order of the phone remains the same.
Switching from Wi-Fi to LTE reduces battery life by an average of 16%. If you think you’re saving battery by turning off Wi-Fi for data transfer, think again.
The Exynos Galaxy S8+ dropped the most at 27%, while Snapdragon flagships continued to fall in the 19-24 percent decline range. This supports most reports that the integrated modem in Snapdragon SoCs is more efficient than their Exynos counterparts, albeit only marginally.
Long Battery Life Phones That You Don’t Need To Charge All Day!
The last browser test we ran is Basemark Web 3.0, a processor-intensive workload that pushes phones to the limit on the CPU and GPU fronts. The Moto Z2 Play succeeds here because it doesn’t have a top-of-the-line SoC, even though it costs $500; Instead, the Snapdragon 626 takes advantage of lower performance and therefore lower power consumption, more than doubling the battery life of some other phones.
Here you can find the efficiency advantage of Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon SoC over the Exynos and Kirin competition. For example, the Galaxy S8+ has a 3,500 mAh battery, but it’s bested by around 3,300 mAh batteries in the LG G6 and Xiaomi Mi 6.
PCMark is one of my favorite tests because it covers a variety of common smartphone tasks. Phones that score well in this battery test have the best “real world” battery life for a full day of normal use.
Huawei P10 Review > Battery Life
Again, we see strong results from the 5.15-inch Xiaomi Mi 6 and weaker results from better-known flagships like the LG G6 and HTC U11. The Galaxy S8+ sits in the middle of the pack with a respectable score.
Another PCMark battery test is available, using the new and more intensive Work 2.0 workload. The overall lineup of phones is still very similar, though the Pixel XL slips down a few spots.
How long can you play on these flagship phones? GFXBench will give us a good idea, starting with the older and less intense T-Rex test. The results here are mixed, with some odd scores as the OnePlus 5 significantly outperforms the other phones.
These Phones Do Not Run Out Of Charge! Phones With Best Battery Life?
GFXBench Manhattan 3.1 is a much, much more intensive test that drains battery life and drains the SoC like nothing else. Interestingly, there isn’t always a strong correlation between higher throttle levels and longer battery life. The U11 lasts the longest of the Snapdragon 800 series flagships, although the Xiaomi Mi 6 throttles more and the LG G6 throttles the same amount.
There are two notable results: the Exynos-powered Galaxy S8+ and Huawei P10 both ease the throttle considerably, but neither can match the HTC U11 or the Xiaomi Mi 6.
The Huawei P10, in particular, gets about 50 percent throttling, but is at the bottom of the chart. Obviously, the Kirin 960 is not GPU efficient.
