Battery life is one of the main features most users want to see improved in their new phones, ahead of slimmer designs and faster processors. Ironically, having the longest battery life doesn’t actually sell more phones, while other more obvious features certainly do. To be fair, of the dozens of phones we’ve tested over the past few years, very few have had terrible battery performance. But what’s great and what’s not in today’s market?
Best Phones With Battery Life
For this article, we’ll be testing more than 500 hours of battery life across 12 tests to make sure we have the best picture of how current-generation phones are performing. On the test bench today is basically every high-end Android phone we’ve reviewed in the past 12+ months. We couldn’t test every phone on the market, but we did
The Phone Enthusiast’s Buying Guide
Covering the big guns: Samsung Galaxy S8+, LG G6, HTC U11, Huawei P10, OnePlus 5, Google Pixel XL and more. Every phone we tested is available for purchase now, with prices starting at $400 and up.
Keep in mind that every phone is tested the same way under the same conditions. There is no subjectivity or utilitarianism here; We run each phone through repeated tests, collect the numbers and put them into easy-to-read charts for your viewing pleasure.
There are two web browsing tests we’ve done on Wi-Fi, with the above results being the more intense of the two.
Smartphones With Best Battery Life
Phones like the OnePlus 5 and LG G6 seem to have performance levels around five hours sitting. Like most tests, this test favors a large battery and a small display, so the Xiaomi Mi 6 performs well.
Larger phones β those with 5.5-inch or larger displays β that don’t opt ββfor larger-than-average batteries tend to underperform. The end result is that choosing something like the Xiaomi Mi 6 over the OnePlus 5 can give you 85% more battery life.
Our second Wi-Fi browsing test is less intensive and more representative of a “real world” web browsing scenario. There’s little change at the top, with the Mate 9 ahead of the Mi 6, though devices like the LG G6 and HTC U11 are still below. The median result on this test is around eight hours, so phones like the G6 don’t hold up well.
The 5 Best Android Phones Of 2022
Switching from Wi-Fi to 4G LTE in the same test negatively affected the battery life of every phone in our test group, except for the Huawei P10, which remained on par with its Wi-Fi results. The general sequence of phone operations remains the same though.
Battery life typically decreases by 16% when switching from Wi-Fi to LTE. If you think you’re saving battery by turning off Wi-Fi to transfer data, think again.
The Exynos Galaxy S8+ fell the most at 27%, while the Snapdragon flagship continued to decline in the 19 to 24 percent drop range. This supports the many reports that suggest integrated modem Snapdragon SoCs are only marginally more efficient than their Exynos counterparts.
These Are The Best Smartphones To Buy In 2022!
The last browser test we ran was Basemark Web 3.0, a processor-intensive workload that pushed the phone to its limits on the CPU and GPU fronts. The Moto Z2 Play succeeds here because it doesn’t have a high-end SoC despite costing $500; The Snapdragon 626 instead uses lower performance and therefore lower power consumption to its advantage, more than doubling the battery life of some other phones.
Here you can appreciate the efficiency advantage of Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon SoC over its Exynos and Kirin competition. The Galaxy S8+, for example, has a 3,500 mAh battery but is beaten by the roughly 3,300 mAh batteries of the LG G6 and Xiaomi Mi 6.
PCMark is one of my favorite tests because it represents many common smartphone tasks. Phones that score well on these battery tests tend to have the best “real world” battery life over a day of typical use.
Best Phone Battery Life In 2022: The Longest Lasting Phones
Once again we see strong results from the 5.15-inch Xiaomi Mi 6, while weaker results from more famous flagships such as the LG G6 and HTC U11. The Galaxy S8+ sits in the middle of the pack with respectable results.
There’s another PCMark battery test, which uses the new, more intensive Work 2.0 workload. While the Pixel XL has slipped down a few spots, the general layout of the phone is pretty much the same.
How long can you play on this flagship phone? GFXBench will give us a good idea, starting with the longer and less intense T-Rex test. The results here are mixed, with some odd outliers like the OnePlus 5 significantly outperforming the rest of the handsets.
Best Battery Life Phones 2020
GFXBench Manhattan 3.1 is a very rigorous test that sucks battery life and throttles the SoC like no other. Interestingly, there isn’t necessarily a strong correlation between higher throttle levels and longer battery life. The Snapdragon 800 series flagship U11 will last the longest, but the Xiaomi Mi 6 throttles more and the LG G6 pushes the same amount.
There are two notable results here: both the Exynos-powered Galaxy S8+ and the Huawei P10 are significantly underpowered, but neither can compare to the HTC U11 or the Xiaomi Mi 6.
In particular, the Huawei P10 is reduced by almost 50 percent, but falls to the bottom of the chart. Obviously the Kirin 960 GPU is not efficient.
