Best Road Trip Snacks – Everything you need to prepare delicious healthy snacks you can easily pack for long drives and picnics this summer!
Is it just me or is this summer barely there? We have really tried to do the best we can, but we have to be creative with our plans given our current circumstances. Getting outside and enjoying nature is very important to our family, especially after being isolated for so long, so one of the things we’re trying to make time for this summer is road trips! Whether it’s a short drive to a beautiful lookout for a picnic or a long drive to dip your toes in the ocean, planning healthy snacks and meals ahead of time is key to enjoying the whole experience, especially in these uncertain times when you can’t go out as much to restaurants or take the food you want.
Best Road Trip Snacks
Not only are pre-planned meals and on-the-go snacks healthier than eating at the gas station or on the drive, but I promise you, these snacks also taste better and are really great for kids! I’ve included a selection of delicious snacks and easy meal ideas, from savory and sweet to savory and hearty, for the whole family to enjoy.
Healthy Road Trip Snacks That Are Non Refrigerated
Here’s a full rundown of all my favorite snacks that I like to pack on road trips. Shopping at Safeway makes it super easy and affordable to find everything I need, and they have a huge selection of products from their Open Nature® and Signature SELECT™ brands!
On any trip we do, I always bring fresh fruit, it’s so refreshing, healthy and easy to eat. Depending on the season, we love to pack strawberries, blueberries, grapes, watermelon, peaches or nectarines, apple slices, cantaloupe, kiwi and even dried fruit like raisins and cranberries. Just don’t forget the napkins!
Besides fruit, I love fresh sliced vegetables that you can enjoy on their own or as a dip. Some vegetable options include carrots, sliced cucumbers, celery, sliced peppers, and more. Hummus is our favorite dip, but you can also take away fresh salsa, or Safeway currently offers a variety of cauliflower dips from Open Nature that taste really good! We love roasted red pepper cauliflower dip!
Best Low Calorie Road Trip Snacks
These are easy to snack on and grab on the go. Safeway’s Signature SELECT brand offers a wide variety of granola bars, different types of mixed nuts and even pre-packaged small bags of almonds. I also like to make mixed energy balls
A big hit with children (and adults!) who need zero baking, they can be made in approx. 5 minutes with ingredients you already have in your pantry and they’re delicious as a road trip! You will find recipes for these
Making salads in jars is a very practical way to pack a healthy and delicious lunch because there is zero mess and they save a lot of space! These jars do not take up much space in the freezer, and you have everything you need for a meal in a simple jar. These canned salad recipes are basically a variation of my tomato, cucumber and chickpea salad, but I also add some quinoa for extra protein and fiber, and fresh arugula for a more complete salad. You can also add shredded chicken or different vegetables and spices to make these completely your own!
How To Choose Healthy Road Trip Snacks At The Convenience Store
Pro Tip: Be sure to assemble the salad in the order I shared above so the salad and vegetables aren’t soggy with the dressing.
When you’re ready to eat, transfer the salad to a plate/bowl, or you can just shake and eat straight from the glass! Trust me, these jarred salads are a total game changer and super easy to put together.
Staying hydrated is important in the summer, so another thing I love about Safeway’s Signature SELECT brand is the wide variety of sodas, and they come in so many delicious flavors! Bottled water is of course very good for you, but plain old water tends to get boring, especially on long road trips, so I love mixing it up with fun flavored sparkling water! You can choose from lemons, limes, grapefruit, oranges, raspberries, mixed berries, black cherries, I mean the list goes on and they are super affordable!
Family Road Trip Snacks: Highway Convenience Stores
I buy all of my products at my local Safeway in Warrenton, VA, but you can easily find them all at any Albertsons Companies store, including Albertsons, ACME Markets, Jewel-Osco, Vons, Randalls, Shaw’s Supermarket, Star Market, and Tom Thumb up. Safeway also offers convenient grocery delivery and DriveUp & Go™. This makes it easy for me to get everything I need without having to go to the store, which has been very beneficial for the past few months.
Hope these tips and recipes for snacks help you on your next road trip! As fall approaches, there’s nothing better than getting outside to see all the beautiful foliage and enjoy the cool weather, so keep all these treats in mind. Maybe pumpkin spice energy balls are next? 😉 Traveling on the road with the family can often be both exciting and terrifying.
