Between extra insulation and waterproofing, winter hiking boots can be expensive. But Merrell Thermo Chill ($ 120) packs all the essential winter functional packages into one affordable package. And moreover, they rank among the best waterproof winter boots out there.
200g M-Select insulation is warm without being bulky. And contoured insoles are flexible and supportive. They are also removable so you can change your favorite socks for added comfort. We found the Thermo Chill to be reasonably attractive but not perfect. However, toe caps are good for rock protection. Due to the mass, weight and warmth, we have no problem with these boots. We believe they are the best winter boots for the price.

The waterproof edges on the sides and around the soles of the shoes are enough for general daily use and even for the most back in the snow for ski resorts.
Traction is not enough on icy or wet surfaces, so we will not use it for severe winter trips. The utensils, chopsticks, and helmet were all made of metal, and none of them failed our test. These boots are snug and easy to sew and take off.
Our only condition? We do not recommend these boots for those with wide feet. Instead, try one of the boots below (Baffin will be our guide and many Merrell boots are available in larger sizes).
