Diagnosed in 2004, Nienhaus underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, which ended on March 15, 2005, the day he got the tattoo on his left arm, the day after his five-year cancer-free anniversary in 2010. It was written: -15-05” and “LIVESTRONG” on the yellow ribbon image.

Nienhaus said he heard about Livestrong and Armstrong’s battle with cancer around the time he learned he had it, which alerted him to the fact that even though he was young and healthy, he too could get cancer.

“On a personal level,” Nienhaus said, “he sounds like a jerk. But if she hadn’t posted, I don’t know if I would have been diagnosed when I was.
