Like many Americans, 2020 was the year I got a dog. To be precise, the Yorkshire Terrier is a Maltese mix named Louie. This was also the year I spent a lot of money on fancy dog beds that I overlooked.

With this bed, although not a fancy dog bed, I researched the best selling dog beds on Amazon and came across Sherry’s original Best Friends Dog Bed. It has over 41,000 reviews and hundreds of happy pet parents are praising it. I had to get one – mainly on the idea of whether dogs should sleep in your bed. What my dog thinks.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy to share a bed with Louie (sometimes). He is happy to rest in the crate when I’m not home. But American Kennel Club dog experts say dogs really should have their own beds. Louie Jr. is five pounds. I chose my first (unused) mattress from Lowe’s based on size, style, and materials like soft velvet. The bed was handmade in Los Angeles, so I waited a few weeks for it to arrive. Yes, I tried putting a fancy dog bed on top of my bed, but it didn’t work.

There is a weight and size chart on the Amazon page, and the Lowe’s resolution is a small 23 x 23. I measured the bed and it’s really close to 26 inches. Other dog owners are advised to downsize when choosing a dog bed.

How did Louie like the bed? I teased him with a sniff and he immediately jumped up, sniffed around, and went outside. I decided it was no big deal to force the dog into bed. Within an hour he found his way and was sleeping like a dog. By the way, this is why your dog likes to roll around before bed.

Later that afternoon, I looked over my shoulder and saw Lou curled up like a dog in a peaceful donor bed. The sound of sleep, his tennis ball, and the magnificent lamb in the corner.

I blotted up the mess with a paper towel and removed the bits (sorry, gross), then tossed the dog bed in the washer on a cold cycle with my regular detergent. Do not dry the dog’s bed, it will dry out the dog.
