The first thing everyone talks about when they walk into our apartment is our collection of candles. C and I collect candles and spend a lot of money on candles every month. In an effort to get our budget back on track, I’ve been trying to make candles every few months to offset our expenses. I don’t know if there is some secret way to make candles that I haven’t found yet, but for some reason every time I make them something goes wrong. Usually it’s my fault because I know how to rush a process or skip a step but in the end they always have a way out, that’s why I always do them.
Today I’m sharing my top tips for making aromatherapy candles (or essential oil candles because that’s what they are!) as well as ways to avoid the same mistake I always try to avoid.
In terms of ingredients, these scented candles are easy to make. All you need are soy wax flakes and essential oils (plus your utensils). Why soy wax? Candles made with soy wax burn cleanly with very little soot emitted when the candle burns. It is also non-toxic so it does not emit toxins when burned.

Soy wax melts quickly and is easy to handle, but you’ll want to use some type of disposable container to stir because it sticks to everything and is difficult to remove once applied. I use a wooden stick that I can throw away when I’m done making the candle.
Aromatherapy candles are more effective than essential oil candles. If you want to learn more about aromatherapy check out this article on Essential Oils 101. You will need to add about 80-120 drops of essential oils. Yes, this looks great but it is divided into 4 candles. The cost will depend on the essential oils you choose. Again, check out this post for more information on the various benefits of essential oils. Feel free to mix and match again! Add the oil directly to the melted soy wax.
Cut your tops to be longer than the height of your jar. You can cut them after they are installed.

Secure your tops with “anchors” by placing a piece of wax on the bottom of your empty jar and pressing it into place with a chopstick.
Use a chopstick (a pen also works) and place it vertically on top of the jar. Tape your rope to it so that it is straight, making sure it is perfectly straight. When it’s not straight it’s all fun.
Pour your wax into the container to fill it to the bottom of the rim by rotating the string. Always pour your candles into your jars over newspaper. Otherwise you will get wax everywhere. And cleaning wax off your stove is no fun at all (trust me!)

You can leave your candles to set in a cool place and it will take about an hour. Cut the tops before they burn.

Although paraffin wax has been the candle wax of choice since the late 19th century, we now know that its costs outweigh its benefits.
If you didn’t know, kerosene is made from petroleum, which is produced by the oil industry. Right out of the gate, it’s not a sustainable option for our DIY candle making.
Additionally, a 2009 study showed that kerosene wax emits many of the same chemicals as diesel exhaust. This product creates a chemical that is more harmful than other waxes. Because soot is a fine powder, it can get into your lungs and cause irritation and allergies.

Finally, paraffin candles often contain artificial fragrances and dyes. These dyes and fragrances are often made with hundreds of chemicals, many of which are phytochemicals. These ingredients are known to affect hormones. Avoid breathing this!
Perhaps the two most popular natural home candles are soy wax and beeswax. Let’s look at the pros and cons of each.
Soy wax candles and beeswax candles are both great options. Both of these non-toxic waxes burn slowly and last a long time. However, because wax is much thicker than soy wax, it will last longer.

Neither wax has a great scent, which means you’ll need to use a lot of essential oils to get the aromatherapy effect you want (we’ll get to that below). But the bee itself has a sweet, refreshing and pleasant scent.
Finally, you need to think about the type of light you want in the chandelier. Soy wax produces a cool blue tone, while beeswax produces a warm yellow. The wax also emits a lot of light.
However, soy is increasingly associated with deforestation in the Amazon. As demand for soybeans increases, land is being cleared for soybean farms.

In addition, many soybean seeds have been genetically modified to resist herbicides and pesticides. The change means that farmers can freely spray toxic chemicals on their fields, where the chemicals mix with groundwater. Some of these drugs and herbicides can make your wax waxy.
On the other hand, wax is a natural ingredient in the beekeeping industry. However, it is not a vegan option as the wax can be involved in colon breakdown.
As long as you choose carefully cut wax, you can avoid many of the negative health effects of candle wax.

For example, soy wax is often bleached, dyed, perfumed and mixed with paraffin. Look for non-GMO, pure, natural soy wax to avoid ingesting these harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, this type can be difficult to find.
Be aware that wax can be contaminated when bees pollinate a field that is sprayed with pesticides. You can support your local farmers and find clean, organic wax at your local farmers market. Ask the beekeeper about his bees and the fields nearby.
Overall, waxing is the safest choice for you and the environment. Not only is it easy to find locally, but it emits a warm, bright light. It will last longer and its natural honey-like aroma pairs well with any essential oil.
