The Samsung Galaxy A32 5G’s excellent battery life and impressive design are a winning combination for budget phone shoppers, but AT&T customers will want to buy it directly from the carrier.
Best Battery Life Phone To Buy
With an attractive design, long battery life and solid performance for the price, the Motorola Moto e is one of the best affordable phones you can buy.
For Android 12, USB-C charging and a large display, the Moto G Pure is the way to go.
While it’s not quite a revelation of its predecessor, the Apple iPhone SE 2022 is a solid little phone that should remain relevant for years to come.

Affordable phones are better than ever. Of course, you can still find very poor cell phones with outdated software, but if you do a little digging, there are many great phones and smartphones that perform much better than their low prices suggest. If you’re shopping on a budget, we’re here to help. We’ve rounded up the best phones you can generally buy for $200 or less at carrier stores, and detailed all the top features you should look for when shopping.
Although budget phones don’t have all the perks that come with mid-range or flagship models, that doesn’t mean you can’t find a perfectly capable device to suit your needs. Let’s start with the features that we think are absolutely essential when choosing a budget phone. Keep in mind that most of these recommendations are for smartphones, so if you’re looking for a flip phone, many of these tips won’t apply.

Battery life: There are many variables to consider when it comes to battery life, but ultimately you want your phone to last at least the rest of the day. If you’re buying a phone with a screen smaller than 6 inches, look for a battery capacity of 3,500 mAh or higher. For phones with larger screens, look for a minimum battery capacity of 4,500 mAh.
Chipset: In Qualcomm’s packed processor lineup, avoid anything lower than the Snapdragon 480 unless it’s a clamshell or voice phone. Mediatek’s Dimensity 700 series is also good, although the company’s Helio series is a little less convincing.
Compatibility: Before you buy, decide if you’re ready to jump on the 5G bandwagon or if you’d rather stick with LTE. Regardless of your choice, make sure your phone supports the correct range for your carrier. Search for 5G and LTE bands by phone model number, not phone name. Once you have your list of bands, you can check out this helpful article from Phone Scoop (opens in a new window) to make sure your phone works with your carrier. You should also find out if the phone supports the bands that best suit your needs. For example, T-Mobile customers in rural areas should choose a phone with LTE band 71 support, while Verizon customers should be wary of C-band coverage on 5G phones.
Here Are 7 Of The Best Smartphones For Battery Life In 2018
Connectivity: Connectivity has a huge impact on call quality and data speed. In most cases, you should choose a phone with a Qualcomm X12 or higher modem. If you’re looking at flip phones, make sure the modem has Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWIFI) and Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) for the best call quality. You should also check for 802.11ac Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth 4.1 or later.
Operating system: The current version of Android is Android 12, but very few budget phones have it. For security and compatibility reasons, don’t go back to Android 10. Also, don’t assume a cheap phone will do
RAM: Simply put, the more RAM the better. For phones under $200, look for at least 4GB of RAM. If you’re willing to spend more, make sure you get at least 6GB.

Storage: Just like RAM, you can never have too much space. Look for at least 32GB of storage on phones under $200, and make sure the phone has a microSD slot. If you’re spending more, opt for a phone with at least 64GB of storage, ideally with a microSD slot.
After confirming the basic features, request additional benefits. Keep in mind that you won’t find many of these features on most budget phones, but we expect some of these features to disappear over time.
Multi-lens cameras: Most budget phones have plenty of multi-lens cameras that allow you to take wide-angle and macro shots. If you have a steady hand and good lighting, these phones can for the most part capture solid images with their primary and wide-angle cameras. Macro lenses are almost always terrible.
Best Android Phones 2022: From Galaxy Folds To Affordable Pixels
NFC: NFC is slowly making its way into the affordable phone market. This is a great feature as contactless payments are becoming more and more popular.
Stereo speakers: Few budget phones have stereo speakers and even advanced features like custom tuning and Dolby sound. While no phone will sound as good as even a cheap Bluetooth speaker, it’s definitely an upgrade over a single driver.
Splash resistance: While we’ve yet to see a price quote with an official ingress protection (IP) rating, several affordable phones now come with splash resistance. They are usually treated with a nano coating such as P2i and will withstand rain and other small splashes, but not even a drop in the pool.
The Best Big Phone 2022
Tempered glass: If you spend more than $100 on a phone, it should have tempered glass to protect the screen from cracks and scratches. Gorilla Glass 3 seems to be standard on most budget models, but we’ve seen a few with Gorilla Glass 5. Generally, each generation of Gorilla Glass is softer than the last; Phones with Gorilla Glass 5 screens are less likely to shatter when dropped, but they’re also more likely to accumulate hairline scratches.
You may notice that we made a price exception here for the iPhone SE at $429. If you’re looking for an affordable new iPhone, this is the one. If all you have is $200, you can get a used iPhone 8. Don’t stay older, because older models will start losing compatibility with new software in the next year or two. For more information, see our detailed explanation of which iPhone to buy.
