God needed a warrior, and He found him. Father Stu is based on the true story of boxer turned priest, Father Stuart Long, whose journey from destruction to redemption inspired countless people along the way. Christian movie rated R. Is it an oxymoron? Well, not exactly. For more than 15 years, Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ has been the highest-grossing R-rated film in worldwide box office history, and remains the highest-grossing film in R in the U.S. always. The market is there, but it is there. Father Stu pushed the envelope further. Christians have a very high tolerance for images of violence, especially if it is intended to depict real historical events. But what about cursing, drinking, and talking about sex? can we Should we?
Father Stu tells the true story of Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg), a boxer from small-town America who moves to California to pursue a career in acting. In order to save money, he got a job at the meat counter of a grocery store. One day while at work his eyes caught Carmen (Teresa Ruiz), a young and enthusiastic Catholic. Stu is distraught, and as he pursues Carmen, he starts going to her church. He doesn’t deserve it, but the majority of the parish accepts. He struggles with alcoholism, and a strained relationship with his estranged father (Mel Gibson). However, little by little, Stu begins to show real faith, and leaves his courtship with Carmen to study for the priesthood. He faces great challenges, but those challenges make him stronger. Although Stu’s ambiguous exterior does not fully emerge, his heart changes, and he begins to infect others with his faith.
Come What May
Another reason why Christian movies tend to do poorly is because the budgets are limited and there is no professional direction in Hollywood. Father Stu is definitely better than most DVDs you will find at your old Christian bookstore. Very nice act. Mark Wahlberg is actually directing the movie. Mel Gibson is well done. However, I still don’t think this movie has a good direction. Sometimes the cinematographic image is very static and close. The needle dropping soundtrack is also annoying.
This movie is not for everyone. I liked it. But I understand that some Christians can’t get past the “news”. Just remember that life is messy, and people make mistakes. God in his grace saves people of color sometimes. Many people are uncivilized, and their sanctification is delayed. We should all be patient with each other, just as God is patient with us.
Sex: Sex is sometimes discussed. Sexual intercourse is suggested between a man and a woman who are not married, but the scene is cut short before they undress. That event is also referred to later as a sin.
Selfie Dad: New Christian Movie Combines Comedy And Faith
Violence: The male protagonist is a boxer, so there are fight scenes. The opening battle is full of blood. A car accident is also shown, although it is not bloody.
Some Protestant viewers may be turned off by this film because of its overt Roman Catholicism. We see the “sacrament” of confession, hearing prayers to Mary, and priestly celibacy plays a big part in that. However, this should come as no surprise, as Wahlberg and Gibson are both outspoken Catholics. It is also based on the true story of a Catholic priest. However, caution is needed when judging the theological content of this film.
This movie has a solid understanding of the gospel. Here are some comments that caught my eye:
Where The Crawdads Sing Is Pure Entertainment: Dvd Review
In Father Stu, we see a man who has become a saint. He repented, preached Christ, and grew. However, his suffering is increasing.
Another thing that seems to happen a lot in mainstream faith-based movies is success. Are you a faithful Christian? Then your marriage will be strengthened, your illness will be cured, your court case and even the football game will be won! This is actually a simple success gospel. It promotes faith as a way to get what we want in this life.
Not to do that. He is honest because he wants to listen. He obeys, yet he is still in great pain. God does not fix all his problems. In fact, his life seems to be getting harder after his conversion. But he happily assures.

“My anxiety is a gift from God. In this life, however long it may be, it is temporary suffering that prepares us for eternal glory.”
“Because I consider that the suffering of this present age is not worthy of the glory that will be revealed to us.
Montgomery considers himself an artist and a theologian. He lives with his wife Shelby and dog Martha McDonough, GA. The Father’s Love tells the story of a filmmaker named Sarah who moves to New York City to pursue her career goals. Then she meets the man of her dreams and falls in love with him. When his father leaves at a young age, he ignores the signs that his relationship is falling apart and tries to fill the void with false love. Her love interest Reece may seem charming and cute, but she can’t see the truth. He fell fast and hard only to find a broken heart in the end. The lesson of forgiveness is shown when Sarah finds out that she needs to forgive her father when he leaves in order to find true love for God and loving relationships. In order for Sara to move forward, she needs to heal her brokenness from her past. This movie is suitable for young adults and adults because of some mature themes. It provides great discussion points for teenagers about finding a true partner. The mistakes that Sarah has made in her love life can shed light on other questions and discussions with your young people related to the film. Overall, the movie is a fun movie and very true to life. We make mistakes and see things differently than they really are because of the pain of our past lives. This shows how we should forgive others as God forgives us in order to move forward. How willing are you to forgive and allow God to heal you?
