Christmas Books For Kids – It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And a special holiday book definitely adds to the magic of the season in our house! I’ve mentioned this on the blog before, but one of my favorite childhood holiday memories centers around my mom and dad bringing a big box of Christmas books down from the attic for my sister and I to enjoy. girl all the time. . They kept them after Christmas so just reading these holiday stories in the month of December made them feel special and it’s something I know I want to do for my kids one day.
Now that we have three boys, our Christmas book collection is growing! Every year I like to add a story or two to our holiday story library and I wanted to take the time today to share some of our favorite Christmas and winter books. (Note: Our family celebrates Christmas, so many of the books are Christmas-themed, but I noticed more winter-themed books for those looking for winter wonderland magic!)

The sweet smell of Christmas is a classic in our family and one of my childhood favorites because I loved all the scratching and sniffing smells. I was so happy to see it was still available and read it to our kids a few years ago. This is a book that our kids keep collecting because they love the sweet story of a little bear who loves to smell everything from hot cocoa and candy to pine trees and gingerbread as he waits for the Christmas Sun.
A few years ago, when I blogged about my desire to build a small holiday book collection for our boys, a blog reader recommended this book to me. I immediately ordered it and oh my gosh it’s the cutest!! It is a large Christmas tree that is too tall to fit in Mr. Schmancy’s luxury house. Willoughby cuts off the top, releasing a spiral of additional tree decorations from various people and animals that end up in one small piece. on the tree of Mr. Willoughby in their homes.
I have a passion for Jan Brett novels because the author came to my elementary school when we were kids and we all had the chance to meet him! The illustrations in her books are realistic and stunning, and her stories are always interesting and loved by our boys. A mitten is a favorite with us during the holidays, as it is a mitten that the boy’s grandmother knits for him when he gets lost in the snow. The glove becomes a perfectly comfortable place for a whole host of animals until they find their way back to the boy. For kids who like to guess what happens next, there are illustrations of the upcoming animals on the sides of each page and our kids love calling out which animal will go into the glove next!

Little Red Sleigh is a sweet story about a little sleigh with big dreams! He hopes to one day become Santa’s sleigh and travel to the North Pole. Along the way, he meets friends, a train and a yellow truck, who talk to him (in a very kid-friendly way) about the importance of working hard to achieve our big dreams and remember to achieve, believe in whatever we believe. . . The pictures are snowy and beautiful, and the story is charming in an unexpected way for Little Red Sleigh as she finds joy in entertaining the children as they take her sleigh.
Dasher is new to our family this year, but Chase (age 5) absolutely loves it, especially! It is about a small reindeer who loves children, but loves his life more than traveling with a circus. When he learned from his mother about his family’s old home under the North Star, he wanted to go there and feel the snow under his feet and the cold wind on his face. He soon finds himself alone after a sudden escape and ends up with Santa Claus. The following is the charming story of how Dasher and his reindeer family helped Santa in his time of need.
Something about Santa Claus is most liked by our children and is read in great rotation every holiday. It’s about a little mouse who realizes that Santa never gets presents for Christmas and sets out to give him a special piece of cheese that deserves a special place on Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve!

Bear Stays Up for Christmas is a sweet story about a bear whose friends are determined to make him stay up for Christmas, despite Bear’s strong desire to hibernate for the winter. They work to keep him awake by finding a Christmas tree, making popcorn garlands and thoughtful gifts, singing Christmas carols, baking cookies and more. Our boys love all the different animals in this book and the pictures are adorable.
You can’t go wrong with any of the Little Blue Truck books and Little Blue Truck Christmas is no exception. The little blue truck is in charge of delivering Christmas trees of different shapes and sizes to his animal friends. The story also works with counting and ends with a lighted Christmas tree that flashes and enchants the little ones.
Pick a Pine is one of those books that looks good on the outside and is good enough to leave the coffee table and pick up to read with the kids anytime during the holiday season! It features fun rhymes and beautiful illustrations of wonderfully diverse families and children spending time together choosing and decorating the perfect Christmas tree.

This book is a classic for a reason. It perfectly captures the magic of freshly fallen snow and follows a little boy on his first encounter with snow. We love this bedtime book because something about the way it’s written is soothing and a little cosy. What’s not to love about a snow day!?
