Christmas Candy Canes And Christ – These holiday candies are as popular as ever, but not everyone agrees on whether or not they have religious significance.
Sweets are the basis of the festival! But how much do you really know about them?
Christmas Candy Canes And Christ
It’s no wonder there are more sales between Thanksgiving and Christmas than any other time of the year. Many people use them as Christmas tree decorations, while others serve them as food. Sugarcane used to be red and white, but is now available in different colors.
Candy Cane Jesus
The candy is believed to have been created by a German choirmaster who gave white candy to unruly boys to calm them down. According to religious opinion, sugar cane is inappropriate, so the choirmaster added the shape of the hook and said that they were members of the shepherd. This was more acceptable because the Bible mentions the stories of the shepherds who first heard the story of Christ’s birth.
According to Susan Benjamin of True Treats Historic Candy, the hook was added to the candy sometime around the 17th century in Germany. But he also said there was no way to be sure who made this change.
In the 20th century, the United States added red sauces and baby perfumes. A magazine called
Why Do We Eat Candy Canes At Christmas?
For most individuals, candy is just a holiday and has no religious connection. On the other side of the coin, it is common these days for churches to hand them out with a small card attached that tells their story.
The card is often referred to as a J-shaped letter to honor the birth of Jesus. For this reason, many believe this to be true. Susana Benjamin disagrees, calling this theology an urban myth that has no basis in reality. However, every year during the holidays, the candy is said to be J for Jesus when held on one side with a shepherd’s stick (in honor of the shepherds who went to Bethlehem to see the Christ Child in the manger) when stopped on the other side.
There is also a story that says the red and white color represents the blood of Christ and his cleansing of us through his resurrection.
The Origin Of Candy Canes (and Their Ties To Christianity)
Many years ago it was used by children in church and school at Christmas. The separation of church and state is stronger now than ever, and therefore Christmas decorations of any kind are prohibited in many public schools.
In 2018, Nebraska school superintendent Jennifer Sinclair banned these candies because she said they looked like the J that represents Jesus. Sinclair was placed on leave and never returned to work. He may also have heard that the red and white staff represent the blood of Christ and His resurrection.
At first it was white. Finally, the red bit and the smell of the baby were added. Today they come in different colors and flavors.

Like beauty, the quality of candy is in the eye of the beholder. Those who see candy as a simple dessert don’t care where it comes from or why. Believers willing to see Christ as the message behind this delicious dessert will continue to do so. Whether real or fake, using these candies to tell the story of Christ’s birth and resurrection is a wonderful way to spread the gospel. Please consider leaving this festival.

I was disappointed that the card was printed pink and cream instead of red and cream. I used a high end laser printer to print a strong red so I guess that’s the file. Other than that, I enjoyed the poem and the pictures. NOTE: After that I tried printing a jpeg instead of a pdf and the color looked better. Next time I will use the jpeg file.
