Classic Family Movies – I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or the fact that some movies that have come out recently have been remade, but the 90’s movies are just the best! Don’t you agree? Having trouble figuring out which 90’s movies to show your kids? I’m with you! I bet some of these will remind you of a movie you had all but forgotten!
My favorite thing about showing our girls these movies is that they get to see technology and fashion. Some, in fact, most of what you can see is cycling. A lot of it has a wholesome feel to it – predictable, Full House Tanner family value that it finally turns out to be and I just love it!
Classic Family Movies
This list took me hours. There are over 100 movies for this, if I do say so myself, list of the 90 best movies for kids, ever!

Don’t get too hung up on exact dates. Some of them are not actually 90’s movies, although they are round. I couldn’t find any release dates for them. But if you remember one of these, you probably remember more, even if they were a year or two old!
Now there are many more movies I could have added, but I really wanted to pick the ones that most families would let their kids watch.
Let me suggest, as someone who found out the hard way. Film evaluation was completely different than it used to be. So was the humor. I don’t know how many times I’ve turned on a movie that I remember loving and being blown away by the language and the language! Fortunately, when I watched as a child, I did too. However, if you are concerned, be sure to check out the movies on CommonSenseMedia to make sure they are right for your family!
Favorite Family Movies
However, I am neutral on everything with John Candy. Goldie Hawn, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and the Olsen twins among them… Our good friend Audrey was one of those attendees and she’s back today to share some of her favorite “oldies but goodies” photos with us! I’m already excited to see it!
I firmly believe that families can love the color and glamor of classic Hollywood. From comedies to musicals, the film industry has a lot to offer from the eighties to the precious thirties.
I was introduced to the world of “old” movies and musicals at a very young age. Between my mother’s love for them and living with my grandparents for much of my childhood, it was easy to fall in love with classic movies. I’m the girl who asked for my Frank Sinatra CD at age eight, which Santa happily gave. It just became a part of me and my family.
Best Family Friendly Movies On Netflix That Are Perfect To Watch Together
That said, I’ve been asked to share some of my favorite family-friendly “old” movies. I’d be lying if I said it was easy, because trust me…it wasn’t. I love so many of them it’s hard to pick just a few. I can tear your ears off because of them! But unfortunately I’m not going to. 🙂
I have given you a brief description of the film and why I like it. I’ve also included a link where you can read more if you’re interested and also where you can find it if you want to check it out!
It is one of seven “road” films that Bob Hope and Bing Crosby made together. Two of my favorite actors of all time and one of my favorite couples, these two never give you a moment to stop laughing. Road to Bali, often paired with the gorgeous Dorothy Lamour, follows them on another journey through crazy events and angry foreign villagers, while fiercely fighting each other for Lamour’s hand. It’s a fun adventure all the way. See the summary here.
Favorite Classic Halloween Movies
Released by Walt Disney Studios in 1969, The Lion Bug is the original Herbie movie and it’s a classic. You really don’t understand Herbie’s charm until you’ve seen the original (sorry Lindsay Lohan, you’ve got nothing on Dean Jones). This movie shows you how Herbie came to be and how he helps the down-on-his-luck race car driver Jim Douglas. This is another great and very family friendly for all ages. They even made two more after that, Herbie Rides Again and Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo. But the first one is the best. See the summary here.
Calamity Jane One of my favorite Doris Day films, Calamity Jane (1953) is a gritty, gun-toting, knee-jerk, musical (yes, a musical, you could totally admit it) that can’t be beaten. to be much more Of the dozens of films in her career, Doris Day said this was her favorite. Instead of being original and decent in a corset, she ended up spitting and laughing. Paired with Howard Keel (Oh My God….he just sings for me all the time), known for Seven Brothers and Seven Brides, they are a perfect match as Calamity Jane learns What is a real woman? I can’t tell you how much fun she is. It also has some of my favorite songs of all time, including “Black Heels”, “Secret Love” and “I Can Do Without You”. What a woman she is. See the summary here.
Rear Window I would be remiss in my film knowledge if I didn’t recommend at least one Alfred Hitchcock film. However, I would advise that this is a film for ages 13 and up. It’s not funny or even scary, it’s just classic Hitchcock tension and suspense. Released in 1954, starring the immensely talented Jimmy Stewart and the equally talented and stunningly beautiful Grace Kelly, this is one of Hitchcock’s best. Stuck in his apartment building with a broken leg, Stuart observes the activities of his neighbors and quickly realizes what happens next after simple dishes and meals. This is really great. If you like it, I highly recommend checking out North by Northwest, to catch the bandwagon and be damned. See an overview of all the Incredible Hitchcock films here.
Classic Movies To Show Your Teen
Thin Man William Paul and Myrna Loy are another favorite couple of all time. They hold the record for most films together – 14! They had a special chemistry that delighted the audience. The Thin Man (1934) was their second film together and is a beautiful black and white film. Don’t let this scare your kids, the picture brings the picture to life, no color needed. This is an interesting mystery film with the famous detective Nick Charles and his beautiful wife Nora. Retired and caught up in the investigation, his attractive wife comes along for the ride. These two are so funny together I can’t get enough of them. I want my husband and I to be like them one day. My little brothers (youngest 7) even love it. It’s a great showcase of how well the Golden Age of Hollywood really did. See the summary here.
McLintock Thanks in large part to my grandfather Derrickott, I am a huge John Wayne fan. You just can’t go wrong with him. McLintock (1963) is one of the funniest John Wayne movies I’ve ever seen. It’s family friendly, gives the men some fighting, the women some romance, and gives everyone more laughs than you can count. The film follows George McLintock (Wayne) as he tries to get his marriage back together with red-haired beauty and rage, Catherine (Maureen O’Hara). All while trying to understand their daughter Becky and keep the local Indians out of trouble. It’s fast all the way. See the summary here.
Bringing Baby Back to the 1930s – my favorite era – we had the lovely Katharine Hepburn (and no, she’s not related to Audrey Hepburn) and the charming Cary Grant. It harkens back to their earlier careers, focusing on their comedic chemistry. In Fetching Baby (1938) they are caught chasing her cheetah ‘Baby’. Another beautiful black and white film, this one is absolutely hysterical and good clean fun for all. See the summary here.
Best Christmas Movies On Netflix 2022
With so many movies in the world today that promote violence, immorality, and other bad behavior, I think it’s important to show our children, and even ourselves, how good movies can be. I have many happy memories of spending the weekend with my family enjoying new music or a great 80’s movie. This is the kind of memory that children remember and want to share with others, just like me.
So gather your family, enjoy those dances and enjoy the laughs these movies will give you. Family movie night is always great fun, and it’s even better when you bring your pets along. So, grab some popcorn, sit on the couch, and share a heartwarming animal photo with the crowd
