Coat Closet Organization – Last month I looked at the hall closet and realized it was a disaster! I could barely reach the back of the venue to grab the boots, our gloves didn’t match and all kinds of things like skates didn’t belong on her. It took me an afternoon to sort things out and then I bought some coat rack organizers that improved the functionality of the space.
Hallway closets are often small, and it’s easy to fill the space with completely inappropriate products. Below, I share practical small closet organization ideas for homes and help you maximize your coat closet space and decide what goes into your coat closet. Coat Closet Organization
I brought sleeping bags, winter snow gear (we live in NC where it doesn’t snow often), vacuum, portable poker table, and roller skates for our family. We moved our sleeping bags into an upstairs closet, snow gear went into a plastic storage bin in the garage, and roller skates and other sports equipment moved into the garage.
Coat Closet Organization For Under $100
Measure the width and depth of your hallway closet to make room for a shoe rack. When choosing the height of a shoe rack, consider the length of your coats and jackets and how many pairs of shoes you want to store. I shopped online and in stores for shoe racks and found a few options, but not many for tall boots.
Our family needed a special place to store our daughter’s rain boots, riding boots and helmet. I bought a maple plywood storage cabinet with 5 cubes on Amazon. The 36″ wide closet fits our 41″ wide closet with a few inches to spare and holds our boots and riding gear.

Hall closets are a great place to store gloves, scarves and hats in winter. There are many closet door organizers available online and in stores. After using a shoe style organizer and ending up with lots of empty slots, I ordered a gray pocket organizer with clear windows that hangs over the door.
Entryway Coat Closet Organization
Now each family member gets multiple pockets for their hats and gloves, and each pocket is easily visible. When the weather warms up outside, we’ll replace the gloves and hats in each pocket with goggles, sunscreen, and swim gear.
Many hall closets have a coat rack with a wire shelf on top. You can improve the functional space by adding storage baskets. Measure the width of your closet and the height above the jackets. Since it’s less accessible to see, overhead bins are a great solution for items you need every week, but don’t need daily access.
Our closet is 41 inches wide, so I added three 11 inch base boxes from Target. I bought some blackboard hang tags and labeled them with the items we need each week: Winter, Summer, and Travel. Other trash can ideas include baby gear, sports gear, water gear, and pet supplies.
Use unused vertical space in your closet. We used a box-style wall rack ( similar here ) to hang easily accessible baby jackets on one side of the closet. Other ideas for a vertical shelf include storing dog leashes, umbrellas, and scarves.

Jackets and shoes cannot be found quickly in a dark closet. If the cabinet doesn’t have lights, they’re easy to add without changing any wiring! We installed a battery operated motion sensor light in our hall closet. It brightens up the space and makes it easier to spot boots and accessories (although I still often hear, “Mom, I can’t find my helmet!”).

If your coat closet doesn’t have shelves, Reynolds says, consider using a short storage unit with drawers to organize small items. “Where possible, try to include storage drawers (ideally with dividers) to store seasonal accessories like scarves, headphones and gloves,” she says.
A good set of storage containers can be a game changer for organizing smaller items in a limited wardrobe. “If you don’t have drawer space, use storage containers and baskets to store umbrellas, gloves and small seasonal accessories. Remember to label each container so you can teach the kids where it goes,” says Reynolds.
Allow wet coats and shoes to dry outside the closet – otherwise you risk soiling or damaging dry items. Instead of chewing up precious space with shoelaces, Botero recommends a simple fastener clip on the top of shoes to keep them upright.
