Computer Keyboard F Keys – On most laptop keyboards — and some desktop keyboards — you can press “Fn” to select whether your function keys work as regular F1-F12 keys or special keys. Alternatively, you can find a setting in BIOS / UEFI or Control Panel to choose the behavior you want.

Modern laptop and desktop keyboards have a set of multipurpose keys in the “function” row. These keys can perform special actions related to audio volume, playback, and hardware features. They can also work like the classic F1-F12 keys – but not at the same time.

Depending on your keyboard, you may have a special lock function (Fn) key. If you don’t, you need to press the Fn key and press the “Fn Lock” key to activate it. Many laptops that ship with built-in keyboards often have an option for this in their BIOS or UEFI setup screen. Restart the computer and press any key it asks you to press at startup to access this screen — often F2, Delete, or F10 — or use a new method to access UEFI firmware in Windows 8, 10, or 11. If you’re not sure how to access this screen, do a web search for your PC model and search for “Access BIOS” or “Access UEFI.” You can also look in the PC manual. Look for the option to control this feature and you can change it. For example, we found this option under Advanced > Function Key Behavior on a modern Dell laptop.

You may also see this option in various places throughout Windows. For example, if you are using Windows in Boot Camp configuration on a Mac, you can open the Boot Camp configuration panel from your system tray and you will see this option “Use all F1, F2, etc. keys” in the standard function keys. “Under the Keyboard tab.

On many laptops, this is available as an option in the BIOS or UEFI settings screen that you can access during boot. If all else fails, pull up your keyboard configuration panels within the operating system itself.

If you still can’t find the option, do a web search for your laptop or keyboard manufacturer and “fn lock” or something similar. The manufacturer should make that information available online or in a manual.
