But in an age where memes are all around us—and almost everything on the Internet has such a label—the realm of categorizing memes is becoming more complicated. Memes can be “forced,” meaning that jokes can be funny because they’re trying too hard. They are “dead” or overused and therefore completely expended. They are rejected as “healthy”. The cynicism of our age in favor of healthy emotions, deliberately provocative thoughts and “encouraging” such opinions.
If “likes” and “favourites” are the currency of the web, memes can be counted among its primary commodities. Someone, somewhere, had to spend time and effort creating each one of them, and in turn, others had to shower their praise and attention on them. This meme economy is fast and cheap and favors original, organic content, despite the widespread problem of plagiarism. But there are those who value memes of dubious quality and exhausted potential—memes like “shitposts,” a term that includes any material whose comedic value derives from its inherent badness, because it is laced with irony and ironic posturing.
This is where the modern use of “dunk” begins: According to Know Your Meme, the first mention of the term in memedom dates back to May 2013, when YouTuber fennthulhu wrote “How 2 make dunk memes!!!! ,” in which he described how to make a success kid meme (also a tired trope) using Quickmeme. (a site devoted exclusively to the familiar, archaic, white impact font meme template now largely ostensibly mocked by Facebook commenters and trolls) explains how to create it. All memes must begin with the French article “le,” obscenity is a strict requirement, and Americans “revolutionary meme warfare.” He claims to have invented memes in. He’s all dead.

The word “dunk” is key to Fentulhu’s sarcasm. If you’ve ever heard someone say this, it’s probably a white guy with dreadlocks describing a bag of weed he got from his cousin who works at Bareneck Ladies. Once a perfectly common adjective for murky, dank basements and eventually dignified slang, to denote power or special subterranean respectability, it became a deeply eccentric expression of the whole sleaze. At a certain point, hearing the word “dank” was almost the equivalent of hearing your dad say something “hip.” Instantly, the authority and authenticity of the speaker is destroyed. And as recently as last year, it was a simple, crucial question about his strength:
Yet in using “dunk” ironically, the meme elite—not to mention their limited capacity for irony—started to mock the most basic meme skills and vocabulary of the “normy” class—bringing the term full circle. Now Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are flooded with accounts claiming that their memes are the most dangerous in circulation. In 2016, we saw the most successful meme campaign in history launched by members of Bernie Sanders’ dank meme stash, simultaneously endorsing the socialist presidential candidate and giving him the face of digital youth love.
In a few years, “dunk” has taken on another layer of genuine feeling, as we’ve moved beyond the old partisan meme beefs and clothed ourselves in the banner of bearing darkness to everyone and everything.

In fact, we may be nearing the end of “dunk” monoculture. When everything is dark, then nothing exists, and the world of memes is constantly expanding, mutating, re-emerging from its own ashes. In recent times, we’ve discovered the spiritual benefits of “new” memes—the never-before-seen and second-to-none in their comments, like the recent cascade of Trump posts. Replacing the “dunk” category, I also recommend checking out the hot “spicy” memes that will burn your tongue. These hierarchies, like memes, stretch toward limits and as-yet-undiscovered formulas, yet we know in our hearts that they must be waiting to be discovered. We work tirelessly to uncover their truths.
Many of the memes we call “sunken” today are due to a flaw in the language. Because there are as many shades of darkness as there are shades of blue in the ocean, and we don’t all have names. Here at this point, you can consider a “pure memory” to be any memory that moves the soul, be it joy or despair. Memes that catch yourself saying “that’s me” or “relatable”. Memes depicting clinical depression, 9/11 and wars that killed millions. Like romance-loving US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, you’ll know it when you see it.
