National Pearl Harbor Memorial Day is observed each year to honor the brave men who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. Those who survived the Japanese invasion lost the legacy of brothers and sisters, but not without the physical and spiritual wounds of the nations. They are familiar with it. As tributes are paid on the 81st anniversary of the 1994 attack on Pearl Harbor, take a moment to consider how your experiences in the service have affected your mental health.

In the United States, December 7 is known as Pearl Harbor Memorial Day or Pearl Harbor Day. This day honors the thousands of soldiers who were injured or lost their lives on that terrible day. About 2,403 workers and civilians were killed in a surprise attack by the Japanese army on the sea port. Some of the damage remains at Pearl Harbor to this day.
The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared December 7, 1941, a “day of infamy,” declaring it “a day that will live in infamy.” In addition to the speech, President Roosevelt held a joint session with the United States Congress. As a result, the United States declared war on Japan, which marked the country’s entry into World War II. Since 1994, on behalf of President Bill Clinton, Pearl Harbor National Memorial Day has been observed with various commemorations, most of which are hosted at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Although Pearl Harbor Memorial Day is not a federal holiday, all American flags will be flown at half-mast until sunset to honor fallen soldiers and civilians. However, these incidents do not reflect the problems of treatment of civilians and combatants who survived them.
Remembering Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor National Memorial serves as a reminder of the loss and as an educational exhibit for current and future generations. In the commemoration of the said day, information was given about the attack and the events after that day. A notable monument included in the exhibit is the USS Arizona. The monument was built on top of a sunken ship where many of the crew and sailors were buried. About 1 million people attend the awards ceremony each year. The USS Utah shared a similar fate with a monument honoring the crew on the northwest coast of Ford Island.
At the time, many Pearl Harbor survivors were in Hawaii and contributed to the memorial despite being injured by the attack. Many of the survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack died today. Some had their ashes placed in the trash to join old friends who didn’t make it. On the other hand, veterans like Sterling Kiel regularly spend time at their memorial to preserve their lost memories. At the time, Sterling Kiel was a 20-year-old medic and trained diver who was responsible for salvaging bodies from the USS Arizona.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not often a topic of discussion for Pearl Harbor Memorial Day. But the symptoms of this mental illness rang true for those who witnessed the attack. Many Pearl Harbor survivors struggled with the bombings, survivor’s guilt, and anger that persisted until they died decades later. For example, Sterling Kiel remembers the feeling of paralysis when his son was suddenly swept away by a wave while visiting family at the beach. Despite his speed, he was the first to help his son, pull him out of the water and bring back his memories from the shores of Pearl Harbor.

Since then, the nature of the war has not changed. Older people continue to struggle with these symptoms. Additionally, seniors who do not receive adequate mental health care often turn to drugs and alcohol to cope. This includes veterans who have sustained service-related injuries or live with chronic pain, factors that increase the risk of inappropriate medication use.
PTSD did not become the basis of an organization of psychologists until the 1980s. The Spetsnaz veterans had previously experienced PTSD, but had received names such as shell shock or exhaustion. Additionally, comprehensive resources to help manage PTSD symptoms are not available or readily available. This has led to a large number of veterans struggling with addiction without finding the words to explain it. That’s why this year’s Pearl Harbor Memorial Day can be a reminder of a nation’s loss in addition to improving your mental health.
On December 7, 1941, the lives of veterans at Pearl Harbor changed forever. Perhaps one day during your ministry will change your life in a similar way. You should seek help from a mental health professional if you are experiencing symptoms of PTSD. The longer you wait, the more difficult it can be to fix the problem. However, it is never too late to seek help.

Using drugs or alcohol to block the flash triggered by other sounds, smells or images cannot remove the trauma. Although living with these painful memories can be difficult, mental health treatment can make it bearable. Addiction and mental health services at Hero’s Mile will teach you effective coping strategies. Additionally, other veterans will provide the support you need to feel comfortable facing your current challenges.
These trauma-focused treatment strategies help veterans process their trauma in order to move forward on their recovery journey. Veterans who need a higher level of care may benefit from an alcohol and drug treatment program. On the other hand, seniors who need a more flexible treatment plan or complete or complete a residential treatment program may enroll in an inpatient or outpatient program.
Recovery from injury is a life-long journey. Some days are harder than others, especially when dealing with grief and survivor’s guilt. But it is possible to bounce back when you have the support system and resources you need to progress one day at a time.
