We discovered that the Fender Mod Shop was a new digital design studio that allowed musicians to create their very own Fender guitar or bass by choosing from a variety of options including colors, pickups, pickups, fretboards, hardware and styles, bridges, and more. and orientation. We were excited to try out the Mod Shop experience for ourselves by building our own custom guitar. Next, choose a color. Fender offers 9 different colors to choose from. In keeping with our classic traditional design, we also went for a 3 tier guard. There were five other options, including gold anodized, tortoiseshell, black, mint green, and aged white pearl. Fender also offered three plastic colors: Age White, White and Black. Still, we thought Old White would give our ax a nice worn road look that goes well with modern classics. We chose the standard SSS pickup design, but opted for the big sound of the Texas Special. Other settings were available, including traditional SSS settings and SSH settings. But we thought we’d be in good company if Hendrix played with the SSS settings and we could squeeze a little more juice out of the Texas Special. Fender offers two options for tuners, American Standard and Modern Locking. We found Modern Locking because they allow for increased setup stability. We had a choice of a standard American Strat Tremolo or an American Elite Strat Tremolo, and the elite series was chosen for a more refined look. While we wanted to keep the vintage feel, we thought the clean, modern lines of the Elite Strat Tremolo gave it a modern twist that fits today’s design aesthetic while staying true to the past. We didn’t want to make a vintage guitar, we just wanted to capture someone’s feeling. Although gold hardware is an option, we opted for traditional chrome. We had fun playing around with different color combinations and the gold looked really cool. In the end, we became traditional.
As if making guitars wasn’t enough, Fender invited us to tour their Corona factory in California. It was amazing. Fender blends modern and traditional not only in their instruments, but also in the technology they use to build their guitars.
For example, pickups were squeezed out of the same cars that have been around since the 50s. At the same time, the bodies are precisely connected on CNC machines.

We were especially impressed with the custom shop where all the custom and customized guitars are made. We couldn’t get close to anything going on there as we were told some were made for famous rock stars! Some of Fender’s custom services include engraving, retouching (the process of making a new guitar look good for vintage), or even custom graphics!
We also had the opportunity to speak with Fender Vice President Richard McDonald and Fender Chief Product Officer Ethan Kaplan:
Richard: We use industry standards… Solid Works 3D parametric modeling, Key Shot for rendering, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. in the design department and on the amplifier engineering side of his PADS, and in the typical open source Eclipse, Keil and GIP Lab environments. Of course we hand prototype, use 3D printing to create models. On the manufacturing side, we use CNC to roughly mill the necks and bodies. This provides a safer and more consistent product than manual pin routing. We’ve made the transition to robotics over the past few years and are pleased with the stability and quality we’ve seen in a safer work environment. Everything else is almost finished by hand. There are approximately 140 hand operations involved in the construction of an American Stratocaster.

Richard: For a 70-year-old brand like Fender, relevance is key. We’re always on the lookout for new trends and cultural movements in a variety of fields, including social media, design, technology, and more. We launch Bluetooth components into our new products, of course we use Wi-Fi and 3D printing for rapid prototyping, and our digital amplification is powered by today’s standard ARM processors. Fender Custom Shop creations are more customizable and unique online, so they can be expanded beyond the standard configuration to truly unique builds. Our Mod Shop Fender Stratocaster is securely packaged in an ABS molded Fender case. It came with a strap, cable, user manual, guitar cleaning cloth and other accessories. We opened it with excitement and were amazed by the flawless finish and deep shine of the Daphne Blue color. We have been playing with it non-stop since it arrived.
