Caterpillar fungus is a type of insect fungus that grows on insect larvae. The fungus attacks the body of the thitarodes larvae, eventually killing and incubating them. A brown to black fruiting body (or mushroom) emerges from the soil in spring or early summer, always on the forehead of the caterpillar. The mushroom is often used in Chinese or Tibetan medicine, where it is used as an aphrodisiac and as a treatment for various ailments, from fatigue to cancer.
