They stopped at the inn, where Don Fernando and Lucinda soon arrived. Luscinda is reunited with Cardenio, and Don Fernando promises to marry Dorotea. Later, the priest and barber put Don Quixote in a wooden cage and told him that he would take him under a spell to Dulcinea. In the end they brought him home.

The second part begins a month after the end of the first, but many characters have already read this book and know about Don Quixote. He became convinced that Dulcinea was under a spell that made her an ordinary peasant girl. Don Quixote and Sancho meet a joking duke and duchess. In one such ploy, they convinced the two men that Sancho must strike 3,300 blows to break the curse on Dulcinea. Later, the duke appointed Sancho as governor of a city and told her that Sancho is Barataria Island. There, Sancho faces various controversies and shows wisdom in his decisions. However, after a week in office and submission to other pranks, he decided to give up the post of governor. Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess play other tricks on Don Quixote.

In the end, Don Quixote and Sancho left. After learning that a false sequel to the book says of him that he traveled to Zaragoza, Don Quixote decides to avoid that city and go to Barcelona instead. After several adventures there, Don Quixote is challenged by the Knight of the White Moon (a student of La Mancha in disguise), and is defeated. According to the terms of the battle, Don Quixote must return home. Along the way, Sancho pretends to manage the desired skin for himself, and they meet a character from the pseudo-sequel. After they arrive home, Don Quixote falls ill, abandons his chivalry as a foolish ghost, and dies.
