There is usually a function called posterise. This is the desired feature. This is the case with paint.net and photoshop. You should first apply an average noise filter reduction to soften the image.

I actually used an iPad app for this (see comments for details), but it can be done with almost any painting software. If you don’t have paint software, paint.net is free and very easy to use.

I chose 3 colors. Usually, paint software allows you to select borders for each color. Try to strike a good balance.

Print at least 2 copies. I printed 1 for cutting, then 1 for reference to separate the layers, 4 in case I made a mistake.

Take out the card piece and attach white tape. Start in the middle and work so that you have even strips on both sides with a slight slip at one end.

Repeat this with the next color but tilt the tape 90 degrees to the final set. This will help later when you remove each layer.

Glue your template to the cardboard. The cardboard was A4 and so was my painting, so I lined it up and taped the two ends together.

You have to measure how much you will push the blade. You need to press hard enough to get through the tape, but not the card. Perhaps this is the most difficult. You can always practice beforehand.

You don’t have to follow the lines exactly, but as I said before, the more time and detail you put into it, the better the result (or so I think). If you look at the finished image, you can see the soft curved shadow on the left side of his face, on the right side I followed a rougher line. Decide which one is best and choose this method!

I found it best to pull the tape at a 45 degree angle so it doesn’t pull the layer underneath at the same time.
