Can I be real? This is my first restaurant in any village where I have lived since I was a child. My first apartment had a weird closet/water closet and it was just dirty and damp, so I didn’t use it. Three houses later there were no options in the kitchen, so I used a rolling island, bookshelves, file cabinets and kitchen cabinets.

I regularly organize closets for clients, but there’s something special about organizing ourselves when buying a forever home. It’s still a little worrying. I recently completed a closet, so I thought I’d share with you how I laid it all out, the cheap scraps I used, and how I made my beautiful sign that blew up on Instagram. With this information you can copy the pattern in your own home. And don’t worry, I’ll link everything in a big list at the bottom of this post.
Kitchen Organization And Storage Ideas
The pantry in this house is a small closet with very deep shelves. I’ve dealt with these types of storage in clients’ homes before and their number one complaint is that things get pulled and forgotten or can’t be reached.
A trick I use for this kind of storage is to use long baskets. I buy a variety of baskets from HomeGoods (and have a note on my phone with the measurements of the shelves in the pantry so I’m sure they fit) and most are between $6 and $12. Items from The Container Store are $20-$30 each, which is pretty ridiculous if you ask me, especially since these are the same type of baskets you can buy elsewhere.
The baskets run the length of the shelf but keep things in place so when I want pasta I can pull out the baskets and grab what I need versus digging and picking things up. Nothing gets stuck in the back and makes stacking dry goods so easy!
I bought a hanging basket for bread and other stale stuff and a canning rack from Walmart that ranged from $6 to $12 and I also bought a lazy susan but didn’t use it. I moved to the bathroom instead.

Another trick I use is to add a small storage cube to the bottom. The shelves are fixed, so they can’t be adjusted, and it’s not in my budget to rip them out and buy new ones. To make use of the large space between the shelves and the first shelf, I bought 6 shelves from Target for $20. He couldn’t fit through the door when it folded, so I crawled in and installed a shelf. Do I look funny and end up with a sore back? Yes. But does it give me more storage space? Yes. # It’s worth it
Planning your pantry layout is the most important step of all when it comes to creating a functional food storage space. Before I put all the food in, I arrange them in small groups around the kitchen counter so I can see how much I have.
(Big tip: Go to the store before you do this so you have a good idea of what your pantry will likely look like once it hits the market.
I added to the basket the type of food that best fits their size needs. For really small and random items, I added a pocket shoe organizer from Walmart for only $5. It is perfect for snacks, individually packaged foods and other ingredients.

I used cube shelves for large baskets and beverage storage. I wanted to use a basket on the bottom instead of an ice shelf because it would be easier to reach, but the bottom shelf is too low for the rolling shelves on the market.
For the dry ingredients, I bought these food storage containers for $32 a pack, which is more than half the price of the expensive OXO brand. I’ve used the OXO brand before, along with other options from Walmart, Target, and Amazon, and this set is my favorite. They open very easily and the air seal is as tight as the expensive ones.
Think labels are more artisanal and less necessary? Maybe, but hear me out. You are the organizer of the pantry and you know where everything goes, but no one in the house has a clue! Expecting your spouse and kids to magically remember where things go is unrealistic, which is one of the main reasons labels are so important.
I made my tags using my Cricut Joy. I measured all the containers and created labels to match the dimensions using the HEITI TC font in Cricut Design Space. You can use my exact size space design template if you end up buying these containers. I used black permanent Cricut Smart Vinyl, but you can use any type of vinyl you like.

Want an alternative to Cricut Joy Smart Labels? The engine has its own free app, so you can create simple signs, vinyl, Iron-On and paper crafts. Learn how to use the app with my step-by-step instructions.
To attach the labels to the basket, I bought these clips from Target in the kids bedroom section. They are actually dry erase stickers for ice buckets, but they fit perfectly in my basket and are a great flat surface for many vinyl stickers. You can use dry erase markers instead if you want, just be aware that your stickers could get dirty or erased by a naughty kid.
Be sure to follow me on Instagram. I’ll be sharing an IGTV video soon to walk you through the whole process. Mine from start to finish. I will also post a second video on how I make labels with my Cricut Joy. Be sure to follow me @ so you don’t miss out! Organizing your pantry is no small task. You’ll need patience and a keen eye to sort through canned goods, cereal boxes, snack bags, and other leftover candy ingredients. And then, once everything is organized, you need the cooperation of the whole family to keep your pantry in order.
How To Organize Your Pantry
But first, you need a game plan – that’s where we come in. Here are 10 easy steps to organizing your pantry, plus our products to help you get started.
Transparency: While it’s certainly tempting to buy black or ivory cans, we recommend sticking to trash cans as much as possible. The transparent side will help you see your stock and keep track of what’s left in stock. Trash cans are also easy to mix and match, which will help make your space look more unique.
Stackability: Every inch of space counts in a pantry. So when buying food containers, think about how they will fit. Square or rectangular containers with flat lids are easy to stack and will allow you to put more items on the same shelf.
Functionality: Your organizer should make sense for the whole family. (Note: if they’re easy to use, your partner or kids are more likely to keep the bathroom clean.) If you have young children, look for a bucket or container with a lid or lid that closes easily. If you have teens or tweens, opt for containers with locking lids or screw-on lids for an airtight seal.

Empty your entire pantry and give it a thorough clean before you begin the organizing process. Check the expiration date and throw away anything that is out of date or no longer in use. This will free up space in your pantry and help keep things organized for longer.
Once you clear out the old items, you can easily see what’s left to organize and start assigning bins. Make a list of basic food items in your pantry and update it regularly. When it’s time to shop, take your list with you.
Then arrange such items together. The Lazy Susan makes it easy to store oils, cooking ingredients, snacks or baking in one place so you can quickly find what you need.
Messy packing can make your pantry look messy. Remove the plastic bag or cardboard box and pour the dry ingredients into a clear container. Odd-looking items, such as bags of chips and root vegetables, go in the trash, as opposed to stacked on a shelf. Choose clear food storage cabinets to keep everything looking cohesive.
