Eels And Escalators Game

Eels And Escalators Game – ES-KEE-LATORS!!!! If you get a signal, you’re my friend now. Today we are making a real version of snakes and escalators. This classic game first appeared in the SpongeBob episode: “Sailor’s Mouth”. It was a game that SpongeBob could never win. I recently thought about how fun it would be to play this game in real life. Unfortunately, there’s no fan-made 2D version and non-thin web versions… until now.

In this Instructable I teach you how to make your own version of snakes and escalators. It’s “I’m ready!!” It’s one of those things I’ve been dying to do. – Come on.

– Semi-gloss clear spray paint (this is really expensive and I don’t know why – local hardware store sells them for cheap)

I apologize, but I was able to contact a company that was interested in the files. For legal reasons, I am unable to send files at this time. However, I have described my 3D modeling work below.

First you’ll want to make the escalators, which are the easiest thing to model in Fusion 360. I drew two straight lines and an iron cylinder.

Next you’ll want to make eels. Using the spine function, I was able to generate the packed items semi-randomly. Playing around with it will create unique and pleasing snakes.

*Note* You may ask why I’m printing in a circle on the board. I wanted something to fall back on in this game. If you play the same game board every time you pick up a board (ridiculous). To solve this problem, I 3D print snakes to move around the board. So there will be a new game to play at almost any time. (You can make these in different sizes and shapes)

After that I cut the mini game. These little guys are funny to look at. I made 4 of them so you can play this game with multiple people (again to make it more fun). The format was very simple.

Finally, I decided to roll the dice. In the episode I saw that the dice were only snakes and squares. This made the spaces on the board useless. So I added the numbers 1-3 on two dice, one with a snake and an escalator and the other with 2 escalators and a ladder. So you can still walk across the board, but you can also navigate the coveted “escalators” or the dreaded “roofs.”

*Note* I don’t think you will need wood filler for this project as the geometry is very simple and looks good with just the base*

Apply two coats of primer first. Remember to prepare all edges and deep corners for escalators. This is one of those tricky areas that may require a little more attention.

Next, you’ll want to paint the play pieces/snakes/escalators. You can just use green for the weak, no surprises there. For four of the game pieces, I wanted to highlight the original two orange and white pieces and color the last two pieces red and blue. Escalators are a tricky part. Next to them is a SpongeBob Hawaii flower design that you can print out by hand or print out the pattern and cut out – so you can make a pencil. I would recommend painting the entire elevator before placing the flowers. Then add some light brown for the bars and you’re done!

Thankfully, this game board has one of the simplest designs. Just a few red squares and a blue background – which is better because I’ve never touched Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop before. If you’re in the same boat as me, I recommend watching some short tutorials on youtube to get you started. It’s really just two squares laid out like a game board, so it shouldn’t be too much trouble. Remember to start your Canvas as an 18″ by 18″ square so that once the Canvas is printed, it will fit snugly on the game board. As for the color, take a picture of the game board on google and use the eyelash function to get the exact color used in the rendering. However, if you want to create your own game board with your own colors, go for it!

Once you’ve completed all the game boards, save them as a pdf and send them to your local print shop. At this point you have two options.

1. Print the board on an 18×18 sheet of glue-backed vinyl ~$25. This option will last forever and there will be no loss at the edges. (The guy at the print shop said he could hold the bullet) -_- let’s doubt it. It is also very easy to stick to the board itself.

2. Print the board on an 18×18 sheet with plain paper/cardstock and place the paper on top of the board. $15 ~ This is a promise to save you some money. I’m also not very sure how the modified paper will react over time.

* There may be a better option (cost-wise) than what I’m offering here, but if money isn’t an issue, the first method is definitely the easier and better option. Personally, I went with option 1 and it feels great.

This step is probably the easiest, but also the riskiest step. These things are very sticky, and if you get it wrong, everything goes to waste. (Isn’t the pressure right?) With a steady hand and the help of a friend, you’ll have no problem sticking the print to the plate in seconds. Cover the foil and gently attach the print to the game board. Take your time and don’t mess it up :D. Here’s a good tutorial on how to attach preprints to a game board (and make the game board itself if you’re interested). As you can see in the manual, it helps to release a small amount of glue and apply immediately. You can then gently close your overhand hand while your other hand flattens the printed side against the board.

You will need to cut one side and sign the other side. A clean cut on this side: (pic 2) and the result (cut but not (pic 3)) If you cut this part, you’ll destroy it and have to start over. Then if you did it right, you should have four folds like this: (Picture 4) If you have a game board, it will be clearer where you cut.

If I had to do it again, I’d invest in a higher quality playset because it’s not very flat when folded into quarters. It’s just a little picky, but it will make it perfect.

Thank goodness for a strong Spongebob fan base that gives us some great reference photos. If you google Eels and Escalators it will bring up enough pictures for your reference.

Find a good spot and throw on some Netflix because it’s going to take a while. If you have an airbrush, now is the time to use it, because painting with acrylics takes a long time – I did it. And then forever…

Escalators: Light orange two steps for most stairs, brown for stairs. The color of the stairs changed between the photos and I think the brown is the best. I mixed brown and yellow to try and create a bamboo look for the rail, but it wasn’t 100% perfect, but I think it looks cool all things considered.

Eels: It wasn’t too bad. I took a lighter green and covered the entire lid and added a darker green for the eyes and outline of the wings/body. Also, if you remember from the episode, there’s a snake with the words “you’re dying” written on it. The game also includes a terrifying killer sea snake.

Cut: If you remember who you are
