“I think of leafy greens like chard, kale and lettuce as low-maintenance plants,” she says. “Other low-maintenance plants that are great for new gardeners include green beans (my favorite), okra, hot and bell peppers, and even sweet potatoes.”

“The best practice is to check the old farmer’s almanac for the last frost date in your area,” says Charles. “Once you find that expected date, I think it’s reasonable to start within the next month or so.”
