“Vet Ink” covers the military that served from the 1950s to today’s armed forces — 11 veterans (either active duty or reservists) spanning every branch except the Coast Guard. Each panel details their time in uniform and when and why they decided to get the tattoo.

Tattoos of pigs or roosters were good luck charms designed to prevent drowning, as these animals were often transported in wooden crates that floated if the ship sank.
For Parker, the tattoos also serve as shorthand for her combat experience for any other veterans who observe them—an “automatic understanding” and a “unifying symbol.” She said she and her fellow veterans can read each other’s service history from their ink.

“I get a lot of people asking me if they are my kids. It’s disappointing and painful,” Parker said. “Women veterans, we are so invisible.
