In general, most dogs can run between 15 and 20 miles per hour for short distances. Lean, long-legged dogs with deep chests (which mean big lungs) run the fastest at 25 to 45 miles per hour. But small dog breeds with short legs like the Shih Tzu or large breeds like the Saint Bernese are slow because the former have a short gait and the latter have a longer gait. You might imagine them on the back of a fire truck or horse-drawn carriage, but Dalmatians have excellent athletic endurance for hikers, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts. Originally bred as guard dogs, high-powered Dalmatians can bond with strangers and protect their humans. Dals make a great companion with regular exercise and lots of love.
Borzois, also known as Russian Wolfhounds, are beautiful, leafy, long-legged dogs that enjoy running and relaxing. Like greyhounds, they are excellent hounds regardless of their size. With gentle and carefree personalities, Borzois show little sign of what they were bred for: hunting wolves. The long coat requires regular grooming, but Borzoi owners will end up with a gentle, smiling canine companion.
