And that’s how Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. He sat in his little study in Philadelphia until he was satisfied. Text has to do two or three different things. It needed to announce bold principles to the world in a way that would stand the test of time. Citizens need to be mobilized.

He may have started once or twice. But getting it done? Admittedly, we hope no better, as he’s only going to take one of these 27 points as a lesson that he should try a few of them (one of them, incidentally, notes that “King George” has withheld justice management”).

The only people who think this are the most uncomplicated people who don’t know that democracy requires humility.
