Glass Designs – For this tutorial, I wanted to highlight the power of Convert Entities, Select All Inner Loops. I also present the use of a circular pattern to create an architectural window molding and the design of the window itself. During the tutorial you can follow along creating the window design below or create your own design using techniques from the tutorial and towards the end you will be able to ‘paint’ your window panes to create a beautiful stained glass design.

A sweeping profile was used to create the exterior design of the window, as a potter would use a method called “sledging” which is a similar method or technique to sweeping, you take a profile or template and run it along a path to create a 3D profile. This is actually the method used to create the architectural plaster moldings you see in homes. The swing was split into 12 separate bodies using a thin section so I could create an edge between the individual molds to make it look like cement.

The circular pattern and the Conical Sketch Tool were used to create most of the sketch for the inner metal frame of the window. The tapered sketch tool allowed me to create even pointed arcs that resembled the tips of petals. The circular pattern was used incrementally to produce the design, with different units being sampled at the same time. Once the design was complete, the thin function was used to condense all the sketch entities to create a frame, which was again created in stages as SOLIDWORKS started to slow down with all my selections.

Once the interior window frame was finished and in one piece or case, I had to create a sketch of all the interior eyelets to create the individual window panes. To do this quickly, I used Convert Entities: Select All Inner Loops. This tool can save so much time, instead of having to select individual loops at once, I was able to convert all the inner shapes at once, so I could easily extrude all the individual panes.

The last part of the tutorial is the fun part, adding color! Here you are free to sit back and add colors to your window, almost like a soothing coloring book. As I mentioned in the tutorial, I added the color to the front of each pane instead of the entire body of each pane to save time during the tutorial, but if you have the time and planning when rendering the window, I suggest adding to the frosted glass with the color on body parts.
