Grizzly Bear Attack Photos – While deadly bear attacks are rare—only about 180 have resulted in fatalities in North America since the late 1700s—their ferocity never ceases.
The following list is not for the faint of heart, as it contains some gory details about camping trips. Here are the five deadliest bear attacks:

On one tragic night in the summer of 1967, two young women were killed by grizzly bears in two separate attacks in Montana’s majestic Glacier National Park.

The two 19-year-old women, both employees of two lodges in the park, were backpacking overnight with friends on Aug. 12. Unbeknownst to them, grizzlies have been spotted near the park’s cabins and campsites for weeks, attracted by food. Left behind by careless campers and even fed to animals by tourists taking pictures.
In the 1960s, U.S. national parks had no bear-proof trash cans and few other safety measures to alert visitors to bears. The two victims, Julie Helgeson and Michele Koons, slept outside under the stars, unaware that their camp was about to be invaded by hungry and aggressive grizzly bears.
Helgesen and a friend were sniffed by a grizzly bear in their sleeping bags before dawn. They tried to play dead, but the grizzly caught them both in its teeth and claws and dragged Helgeson away as he screamed for help. A search and rescue team found her critically injured hours later and she died before an emergency helicopter could reach the hospital.
Koons and her friends have more warnings, but equally dire results. Their camp was ambushed by a grizzly while they were cooking, but they thought the animal had eaten enough, so they moved to the beach for the night. The bear returned at 4.30am and when her friends were able to climb a nearby tree, Koons was brutally beaten – with the bear biting off her arm. She succumbed to her injuries before help arrived.

Jack Olsen led sweeping policy changes in U.S. national parks to prevent animal feeding, remove trash and close campgrounds and trails where bear activity has been reported.
On the Japanese island of Hokkaido, there lives a brown bear called Ussuri, which is bigger than a grizzly bear. They can also be deadly aggressive, with 86 Ussuri attacks recorded in Hokkaido since 1962, in which 33 people were killed.
But Japan’s worst bear attack occurred during a tragic week in December 1915, when a ravenous bear woke early from hibernation and went on a killing spree at the border post of Sankebetsu, killing seven people, most of them women and children.
The hungry and agitated bear, which weighed 750 pounds and stood 9 feet tall, killed its victims by stalking them through their homes. Although the city has assembled an armed security force, it has not been able to stop the almost daily attacks. The bear was shot multiple times but kept coming back to claim more victims, including a pregnant woman and a baby.

Finally, professional bear hunters were called in and killed the bear. Traumatized, most villagers moved away from Sankebetsu, where a shrine now stands to commemorate the lives lost in the brutal historic attack.
Jewel Palovak, co-founder of the grassroots group Grizzly People, poses for a photo in her Santa Monica office. Another co-founder of the group, Timothy Treadwell, was killed by a grizzly bear in October 2003, along with his girlfriend.
Timothy Treadwell made a name for himself as a grizzly ‘friend’ in Alaska’s Katmai National Park, where he documented his startling intimacy with these majestic and fearsome animals relation.
For 13 years, Treadwell spent his springs and summers at the park, filming playful interactions with wild grizzlies, whom he nicknamed Cookie and Mister. chocolate. Without any wildlife training or special expertise, Treadwell calls himself a grizzly “protector” and appears in magazine and TV profiles.

Sadly, his most famous appearance came in the 2005 documentary “The Grizzly Man,” which chronicled how Treadwell’s grizzly obsession ended horribly. On October 5, 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were killed in their tent by a hungry grizzly bear.
Treadwell watched in horror as his camera spun, but only the sound survived because the lens cap was in place. Filmmaker Werner Herzog, who directed the documentary, was one of the few people who heard the disturbing recording. When he did, Herzog suggested that it be destroyed.

In 2011, a group of British teenagers embarked on a month-long Arctic expedition in Norway, hoping to get a rare glimpse of a polar bear in this stunning landscape. However, no one expected that such an intimate encounter would take the life of a 17-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a doctor.
Grizzly’s Rare Aggressive Attack Kills 1, Puzzles Officials
Young Horatio Chapple was one of 80 students taking part in an expedition to Svalbard, Norway organized by the British Schools Exploration Society (BSES). Teens are excited to explore the remote wilderness, meet new friends and research the effects of climate change on the Arctic environment.
Polar bears are a well-known threat in Svalbard, but parents are assured that all participants will have flares in their enclosures to scare them away, and that the camp will be surrounded by wires that detonate small mines. They were also told that an adult group leader would be in possession of a firearm.
However, when the expedition hit the ice, the team realized there weren’t enough flares to get around, and some wires weren’t working. The gun that Leader Chapple carried was an old rifle, the adult leader had not been well trained in its use.
As fate would have it, a hungry polar bear sneaked into Chapple’s camp while the children were asleep. It tore through Chapple’s tent, bit one of his companions in the head, and then attacked Chapple, who was pulled from the tent and killed. In addition to Chapple’s death, four other members of the survey team were also seriously injured by the polar bear, including two adult leaders who struggled with rifles that ultimately killed the desperate animal.

LiardRiver Hot Springs Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada is a boreal forest paradise where locals and tourists flock to soak in the steaming pools. On August 14, 1997, Patti McConnell and her two children needed a break from their long drive from Texas to Alaska and decided to stop at the hot springs.
McConnell and her 13-year-old son Kelly walked down the boardwalk and up the stairs to explore the less crowded pool. Then McConnell heard rustling in the bushes and turned to look at the big black bear. She could barely scream at Kelly before the bear pounced on her and began beating her viciously.
Despite his size, Kelly kicked the bear in the face and hit it with a branch trying to save his mother, but the bear grabbed him by the neck, lifted him into the air by his waist, and threw him aside.

Hearing their cries, bystander Ray Keech rushed to the scene and also tried to pull the bear away from the two bloodied victims. The bear turned on Kitchen and hit him so hard that they both jumped over the railing and rolled down the slope, where the bear fatally broke Kitchen’s neck.
Another man was critically injured before two other bystanders with shotguns charged at him and killed the rampaging animal. While McConnell also succumbed to her injuries, her brave son survived, and Kelly and Keech were (posthumously) awarded a Medal of Bravery by the Canadian government.
