Everything You Need To Know About The Caf Awards 2023

It may be Neil Patrick Harris’ first time hosting an Oscar, but it’s not his first gig. In fact, the man is just one Grammy away from holding an EGOT, having hosted Emmys (twice), The Tonys (four times), as well as the World Magic Awards and Video Game Awards. (Bring on the EGOTWV!)

And there’s a good reason why he’s being invited back. Harris is the consummate showman, an all-singing, all-dancing, comedy machine who looks great in a tuxedo and knows how to find his way in a mash-up. Here are some things we hope to see this Sunday, inspired by Harris’ past concerts:

The TV Land Awards may not be the Emmys, but Harris’ hosting gig did create this awesome intro video that features Harris as a character from several classic TV shows, including Watchmen of Malibu, The Twilight Zone and “Happy Days” (not to mention Johnny’s impression of Carson on rival Dana Carvey).

From the jazzy “Put Down the Remote” at the 2009 Emmys to the epic “Bigger” in 2013 (see below), Harris is perhaps the undisputed master of original award-winning songs. However, our undisputed favorite was the 2011 Tonys “It’s Not Only for Gays Anymore,” in which Harris was surrounded by nuns, sailors, flight attendants and Mormon missionaries who danced to chants like “we’re asking all heterosexuals to leave so we can know better” and “put down your Playboy and make a plan to get a poster and feel like a man.” (He also knows how to keep things risqué, reportedly turning down the network’s request that he change “No Fornication Required” to “Same-Sex Love Required”).

While some hosts appear for their opening monologues and then disappear — just like Tina and Amy at this year’s Golden Globes — Harris sticks around until the end. Of course, the last thing you want at the end of a three-hour broadcast is the slightly over-the-top but magical closing number at the 2009 Tonys, which combines West Side Story’s “Tonight” and Guys and Dolls’ “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” (with original lyrics, by the way ) proves that Harris can keep even the dullest party going.
