Although many people think that it is purely about the expected dress code, it is much more comprehensive than this. When choosing your venue, consider how the decor and atmosphere will work for a black tie event. With a generous budget transforming a venue is always a possibility, but with a more limited budget you will need the venue to function as it is. Also consider more practical aspects such as women in high heels. I’ve worn historic places before that prohibit heels because of the expensive flats.

Likewise, how will women feel in their strappy clothes in a tent if it’s raining and cold? Long clothes with rainwater slowly soaking them in osmosis is never a good look!
Your decor should match the glamor of your guests’ attire, so design your space with a luxurious, elegant and classy feel.
With the best production providers on board, there are few limits to what can be achieved. In the past I have re-carpeted an entire ballroom as the patterned carpet was not going to work with the glamorous and chic look we planned. Use curtains you can section on parts of the room to create different areas or even hide questionable areas with wallpapers.

I’m a big fan of using lighting to transform a venue and create the right atmosphere. With dark parts, I would say that lighting is even more important than ever. Consider centerpieces to make your centerpieces stand out, and you need great lighting to get the dance floor going. For a special touch, you can light up the outside of your venue, either with a wash of color or a custom ‘gobo’ (a design projected onto the building). You can use a similar projection on your dance floor, which is particularly effective if the tables surround the dance floor.
