It’s in the dining room, kitchen, entryway, and hallway, which tend to be high-traffic areas. Because the tiles have been used so much, the grout lines have started to look very dirty. It doesn’t help that the tile and grout are both very light in color and show dirt easily.
There are tons of pints on Pinterest that tell you how to clean tile and grout. I used a mixture of 7 cups of water, 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/3 cup of ammonia, 1/4 cup of vinegar and a lot of elbow grease. I mixed everything in a spray bottle and sprayed the mixture on the grout line one at a time. I scrubbed the grout with an old toothbrush and then wiped the grout with a cloth. I kept a small glass of water nearby to periodically rinse the toothbrush. I did the spray, wash, wipe routine over and over for each putty line. Yes, it is time consuming and tedious, but I did a small section at a time and was able to finish it in just a few days. If anyone knows of a better or faster way to clean tile grout, please let me know!

Then I discovered a MUCH easier way and with this trick it was easy to clean it. Plus, my “helpers” can come into play and I don’t have to worry about harsh chemicals!
Grout Cleaning 101
All you need is vinegar, baking soda and a putty brush like this one in a spray bottle.
1. Sprinkle baking soda on the joint. Use your finger to make sure it covers all of the putty and also wipe off any excess powder. Use a spray bottle filled with vinegar to apply on the baking soda. Sixth grade science project lovers unite – the chemical reaction does all the work for you! Let it sit and lather up and scrub on your own for a few minutes. But not too long, otherwise dirt will settle into the grout.
2. Using a high quality putty brush like this one, brush a little to remove the dirty putty solution. Prepare to get sick! Holding a glass of water to quickly lift the brush helps, but don’t add too much water to the floor – the thicker the solution, the less elbow grease you’ll need to put into it.
3. Wipe off the muddy solution (I used cloth instead of paper towel to increase my green cleaning appeal). Then clean as usual: give a quick vacuum to remove any excess baking soda and then mop it over.

I cleaned this section in less than 30 minutes and – and I’m ashamed to admit it – it had built up on the grout that should have been exposed for over 7 years. My “ah-ha” moment came when I opened the bathroom door and saw this line where I stopped cleaning. Well! Still, it’s good to see how well the vinegar trick works.
I call it a sink bomb because it is just that – BOMB! Vinegar is great when it comes to cleaning the sink. First I sprinkle some baking soda in the sink and then spray some vinegar and let it lather up. Baking soda is a low-sand way to clean your sink, and vinegar is a disinfectant. Wipe and rinse, your sink is now fresh and clean. Then, if your garbage is a bit smelly, add a cup of vinegar and let it sit for about an hour. No more s-t-i-n-k.
This is a real bomb. If the garbage disposal or drain is clogged, add an equal amount of baking soda followed by vinegar. Here comes the 6th grade science project again – hello volcano! So it’s a cleaning volcano. Rinse with lukewarm water. NO harsh chemicals to worry about, it’s like new.
