Deep into your hours of browsing TikTok, you’ll likely come across videos like a mascara that will make your lashes look huge, or even Chitotle’s weird homemade “tortilla fork” hack. But some of the best TikToks can be the ones that feature cleaning tips or products that you can actually use in your life. (Yes, cleaning can be fun!)

I recently discovered TikTok user Cynthia Sierra’s videos and was instantly hooked. I immediately knew I had to share his tile grout cleaning hack with the world. And with over 14 million views and over 2 million likes on Sierra’s first video, it’s clear I’m not the only one who finds this cleaning tip super satisfying.

In the video, you’ll see the *suspicious* dirty tile grout that can easily happen if you don’t clean your floors regularly. But when you use an unexpected product, it sucks

The product he ends up using – the drum roll – is toilet bowl cleaner, which is actually genius if you think about it. Sierra pours the cleaner onto the dirt-covered sections of the putty, lets it sit for five minutes, then uses an old toothbrush to scrub away the dirt. After you wipe off the excess cleaning solution and dirt, the grout is clean. If you’re like most people who assume mortar is brown in the comments, now you know.

While the first video only shows a small part of the board being cleaned, the second part video follows, which is even more satisfying to watch.

@cynthiasierra071 I’ll do part 3 and show the whole cleaned floor! I’m so tired after doing this piece! #cleaning #fyp #satisfying #cleaninggrout ♬ Buttercup – Jack Stauber

It’s in the dining room, kitchen, entryway, and hallway, which tend to be high-traffic areas. Because the tiles have been used so much, the grout lines have started to look very dirty. It doesn’t help that the tile and grout are both very light in color and show dirt easily.

How To Clean Dirty Floor Grout

There are tons of pints on Pinterest that tell you how to clean tile and grout. I used a mixture of 7 cups of water, 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/3 cup of ammonia, 1/4 cup of vinegar and a lot of elbow grease. I mixed everything in a spray bottle and sprayed the mixture on the grout line one at a time. I scrubbed the grout with an old toothbrush and then wiped the grout with a cloth. I kept a small glass of water nearby to periodically rinse the toothbrush. I did the spray, wash, wipe routine over and over for each putty line. Yes, it is time consuming and tedious, but I did a small section at a time and was able to finish it in just a few days. If anyone knows of a better or faster way to clean tile grout, please let me know!

The tile floor looks much better! Now that I’ve cleaned the grout, I’m wondering how I’m going to keep it that way. I heard that the mortar needs to be sealed. I was totally skeptical when the school I teach at decided to use vinegar – VINEGAR! – to wash the canteen floors every day. After doing some research, it turns out that vinegar is a healthy cleaning alternative to products with scary ingredients. Plus, it’s cheap and safe, both for the environment and for the 400+ children we depend on every day…BUT.

BUT, there’s one little detail I’ve been quietly wondering and dreading asking: Wouldn’t the cafeteria smell like vinegar all day? Because if it was

We would hear it from the 400+ lovers I mentioned earlier. They don’t hold back. On any subject. NON-STOP.

Guess what? The smell dissipated a few minutes after it was placed on the ground. Our school saved tons of money by using vinegar to clean it, and pretty soon I started throwing things all over my house. It combines beautifully with other non-toxic products to clean your home naturally, safely and inexpensively. What is not love?

Over the years I’ve discovered a few cleaning tricks where vinegar is the star. It was a perfect fit as I only use natural cleansers. Here are three ways to achieve chemical-free cleaning, a spacious home, and a good green mix!

How To Clean Dirty Floor Grout

Our previous kitchen had large white tiles with grout. When we first moved in, we spent hours cleaning with a chemical joint cleaner. Then I discovered a MUCH easier way and with this trick it was easy to clean it. Plus, my “helpers” can come into play and I don’t have to worry about harsh chemicals!

Grout Cleaning 101

All you need is vinegar, baking soda and a putty brush like this one in a spray bottle.

1. Sprinkle baking soda on the joint. Use your finger to make sure it covers all of the putty and also wipe off any excess powder. Use a spray bottle filled with vinegar to apply on the baking soda. Sixth grade science project lovers unite – the chemical reaction does all the work for you! Let it sit and lather up and scrub on your own for a few minutes. But not too long, otherwise dirt will settle into the grout.

2. Using a high quality putty brush like this one, brush a little to remove the dirty putty solution. Prepare to get sick! Holding a glass of water to quickly lift the brush helps, but don’t add too much water to the floor – the thicker the solution, the less elbow grease you’ll need to put into it.

3. Wipe off the muddy solution (I used cloth instead of paper towel to increase my green cleaning appeal). Then clean as usual: give a quick vacuum to remove any excess baking soda and then mop it over.

Here you go, clean grout with half the work and without an expensive specialty cleaner to buy. I cleaned this section in less than 30 minutes and – and I’m ashamed to admit it – it had built up on the grout that should have been exposed for over 7 years. My “ah-ha” moment came when I opened the bathroom door and saw this line where I stopped cleaning. Well! Still, it’s good to see how well the vinegar trick works.

I call it a sink bomb because it is just that – BOMB! Vinegar is great when it comes to cleaning the sink. First I sprinkle some baking soda in the sink and then spray some vinegar and let it lather up. Baking soda is a low-sand way to clean your sink, and vinegar is a disinfectant. Wipe and rinse, your sink is now fresh and clean. Then, if your garbage is a bit smelly, add a cup of vinegar and let it sit for about an hour. No more s-t-i-n-k.

This is a real bomb. If the garbage disposal or drain is clogged, add an equal amount of baking soda followed by vinegar. Here comes the 6th grade science project again – hello volcano! So it’s a cleaning volcano. Rinse with lukewarm water. NO harsh chemicals to worry about, it’s like new.
