How To Create A Quilt

How To Create A Quilt – Some quilts are soft, fluffy, and incredibly comfortable. Others finish a little on the stiff side (or really, really stiff!), with a flat, thin appearance. As a long-armed quilter, I’ve witnessed the transformation of many quilt noodles into finished quilts. Would you like to know the secret to making a soft, cuddly quilt? These are the most important factors.

Low loft batting is the standard for today’s modern quilting machines. Loft refers to the thickness and bulkiness of the batting. Battings like Warm & White and Quilter’s Dream Select are low-loft — that is, thin.

For low-loft batting, the quilting thread blends into the top of the quilt as much as possible, since the quilt doesn’t have much depth. However, this lack of depth = a thin, flat look that is the opposite of comfort. Consider polyester batting for mid-to-high lofts and wool batting for high lofts. Either choice will add more charm to your quilt.

Here’s a bunch of batting from my long arm quilting studio. The bottom two battings are extra large low-loft cotton. The next batting, which looks huge in comparison, is wool batting, also extra large. This will be an even more comfortable quilt my friends!

I recommend Soft & Bright batting for the polyester option and Quilter’s Dream Wool for the wool option.

There’s no way around it—less quilting equals a softer quilt. Now, I do like the densely quilted look, but I save it for a comforter or wall hanging. For a quilt you want to snuggle up on the couch, open quilting produces a softer quilt.

What is “open”? I consider medium density quilting when there is a maximum of 1″ or so between quilting lines. Open seams are larger. For open quilting, look for patterns that have 1.5″+ regular spacing between quilting lines.

Also, choose designs with fairly regular quilting coverage. If your quilting pattern is tight in certain areas (several threads coming together at one point), those areas will definitely feel stiffer. Soft, curved designs often work wonders.

Here is an example of an ideal quilting design for a soft and cozy quilt. The flap pattern provides even quilted coverage rather than getting tight in places. It looks good for its size and allows for plenty of opening between quilting lines. This quilt is made of wool batting. Doesn’t it look cute?

Also consider loop quilting styles, like this quilt I recently completed for Saskia. Hoops often create an open quilting style and look great in large areas. Her quilt is made with low-loft batting, so even with the quilt open it looks flatter than the last example.

Want your quilt to be extra soft? Skip the plain quilted cotton and use a special base fabric instead. Think of something that already feels cute – flannel, mink/hug, wool, etc. One of my customers skipped the batting entirely and used thick, plush fleece for the backing of her quilt. The result is a nice and warm skinny quilt!

Keep in mind that stretch fabrics (knits like wool and mink) are more difficult to work with. Be careful not to stretch them when baking and quilting. An experienced longarm quilter should know how to handle these special fabrics.

If your goal is to get the softest, coziest quilt possible, choose a patchwork style with more bulky fabric and fewer stitching. That’s right—less work for you, too! Densely stitched (think 1.5″ squares) will produce a heavier, stiffer quilt top than larger stitches. There’s only so much you can do to soften dense stitching. On the other hand, if you choose a large patchwork, your quilt will naturally have a lot of drape and a soft touch.

I hope this helps you plan your next cozy quilt project. Have more tips for soft quilts? I’d love to hear what works for you in the comments! Once you have your fabrics, you can prep them. Some people pre-wash their fabrics, but that’s entirely a personal preference. I choose to never prewash my quilting. (But I do prewash for garment sewing because I want them to fit!) I make sure to flatten all the fabric, which is especially important if using precuts that have been creased and folded for a while. I use the unscented Best Press when ironing as I find it helps speed up the ironing and gives a very crisp finish.

The pattern you decide to use will determine exactly how much of each size and color you need for the quilt you want. I highly recommend reading through the entire pattern before starting to make sure you understand the math behind it. If it’s a free mod, the chances of errors are slightly higher, since the designers don’t always have mode testers, but I’ve personally only had a few issues.

If the pattern you’re working on is block based, I recommend cutting out a block first and then making a test block before cutting the rest, just in case you notice something you want to adjust before cutting all the fabric.

People use many different techniques when choosing how to stitch their pieces together. As a beginner, I definitely recommend using PINS – lots of them!

If you’re completely new to quilting and plan to use a sewing machine, you need to see if your sewing machine has 1/4 inch feet. Having a wizard help is helpful, but not entirely necessary. Before sewing your piece together, do some test seams to make sure you know where the 1/4″ mark is. Many people choose to do a “short” 1/4″ which is really just a weird term , meaning just a wire or two smaller than 1/4″ to allow room when it flips over
