How To Draw A Tree With Branches – Do you struggle to paint tree branches? This is a technique that many beginning acrylic painters struggle with.
This blog post is part of a small series of tutorials I’ve created to help new painters with basic techniques!
How To Draw A Tree With Branches
The step by step tutorial below will show you a guide on how to draw basic branches using two different brushes and black ink.
Why I Draw Trees — Nature Journaling Week
A quick note about brushes! In my opinion, there is no standard brush for twigs. You can use a round brush, a flat brush, or an angled brush. You can also use a small brush for thin branches. It really comes down to your choice.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to paint branches using a #4 round brush and a 1/4″ angled brush. I’m using the Royal and Langnickel Moderna brushes.
When you dilute the black a bit, it allows the ink to flow better. You swirl the brush in some water and then apply it to the paint on the palette.

Use your #4 round brush to paint this trunk base. It should start thick and then thin (like a triangle).
Use the tip of the brush and “light pressure” to divide the branch into two sections. These lines should be thinner than the base branch you drew first.
The beauty of the Angle Brush is that you can use it to create thick and thin lines. When you use the full width and apply firm pressure, it creates a thick line.

If you hold it so that the bristles at the top corner of the brush are touching the canvas, it will create fine lines.
Load the corner brush with slightly diluted black. Then draw a thin line across your branch. Use the corner tip to create fine lines.
Hold the brush so that the upper part is on the left and draw the branch. Use the tip of the brush to create fine lines.

Continue using the angled brush to draw thinner branching lines. Let its branches close in different “spiky” directions.
I like to do this to make my branches look more natural. Go back and thicken some of your base/swish branches a little to the sides.
Then just take the corner brush and draw more branches. You might even have some overlaps with each other.
How To Draw Tree Easy Step By Step Tutorial
Mixed media blocks and watercolor blocks are great for practicing techniques like twigs! Keep practicing and you’ll get the hang of these branches! Hi again guys! This is another easy drawing tutorial for all budding artists to try. Today I’ll show you how to draw a dry dead tree. I plan to post another tutorial on how to draw a living tree with leaves. But for some reason I thought I’d start with this one first, since there aren’t many tutorials yet.
Make sure you have all your drawing materials ready before starting this first step. Hope you have fun with this one!
In this tutorial, we’ll start at the bottom and work our way up. Personally, I find this method a little easier than starting from the top, because the bottom part is much thinner than the top part. Go ahead and start painting the bottom part of the tree as shown above.
How To Draw A Tree
The main component of this dead tree will be the tree branch. Since there isn’t much else to this type of tree, let’s jump to the right side of the branch. I started on the left branch first.
Try to add a lot of style and curl to your branches as well. Its branches can vary in size from small to large, small to short, or fat to thin. It really depends on you.
It’s almost the same as above. Just draw some branches of your tree. Try to make your tree look as full as possible. There are no pages, so it’s a little empty to start with. Fill your tree with branches.
How To Draw A Simple Tree: 11 Steps (with Pictures)
Once you’ve given your dead tree a lot of branches, it’s time to get down to the little tree details like wood/age marks.
Draw some age marks on your tree as in the example above. Just simple vertical lines across all these trees.
After this last step, that’s all! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and that you share it with others who might be interested in learning something new to draw.
