Let’s make the mouth of our puppet! Cut a piece of cardboard that fits just inside the width of your sock, then fold it in half as you close your mouth.

Draw what kind of mouth shape you want! It can be short or long, round or pointed, you can even make your puppet over or under! Once you’ve decided on the shape of your mouth, cut it out from your piece of cardboard.

Using a hot glue gun, glue your cardboard mouth part to a piece of felt. We used red felt for the inside of the dragon’s mouth.

Cut around the mouth piece of cardboard leaving a ¼” border. Draw small hair lines on the side so you don’t bend and glue the border to the bottom of the mouth of the cardboard.

To cut out the dragon’s teeth, a piece of white felt was long enough to wrap around the top of the mouth piece and wide enough for the teeth. Remember to keep one side that you can use to stick it in your mouth! Next, cut a row of small triangular teeth.

For our dragon’s eyes, we glued hot googly eyes onto large pom poms, then glued them onto the puppet’s head.

We also used pom poms for the nose! We added some fabric to the top of the sock to make a thicker muzzle for our dragon as well.

To finish off our dragon, we cut a pointed spine from the purple hair and hot glued it to the back of our stocking.

For the bumblebee we used googly eyes and buttons for the eyes, and pipe cleaners and pom poms for the antenna. Maybe you want a fancy dog puppet friend!

Hi, this is Jill from Snugglebug University, and I’m excited to be back here today to show you how to make your own puppets!

I think the puppets are a great addition to the summer, and I have so many happy memories of the “shows” growing up. So when my 5 year old asked me to make him a doll (

All the puppets are from the same basic template with only a few changes for each animal. I’ll walk you through how to make each change, but hopefully you can use the template to make more animals! Maybe even puppets!

Ever since I made my kids candy/flower shop out of an old flower box, I’ve dreamed of turning it into a puppet theater. I’m so glad we finally took the time to produce this puppet. The best part about being a puppeteer is that you don’t need a fancy theater to put on a show. Use the back of a sofa, table, cardboard, or even a sheet and voila! You have a theater!

Creative Diy Puppet Ideas To Make A Puppet For Your Kids

Once I start making things for the kids I can’t stop (or sleep really, I’m crazy like that). So these little felt puppets gave rise to a “seamless” marionette, and you can find a tutorial on my blog today. They are a great addition to this fearsome dragon!

But I must warn you! Once you start making a puppet, it’s hard to stop!

I generally prefer wool blend over acrylic felt because it seems to last longer and doesn’t pill. I used acrylic felt for this project, mainly because it’s cheaper and works well. If you want to make a family heirloom, go for the good stuff.

The puppets themselves are small and therefore perfect for child-sized hands. (The puppets fit my small adult hands, but are a bit tight for anyone with larger hand sizes).

These dolls can be made for children, but they are not very easy to sew. You have to sew in tight spaces, and you have to make a lot of pieces of fabric into 3D shapes (which can be hard to see). Don’t worry though, I’ll walk you through all the steps (and feel free to check out the sewing 101 post for more help).

Ready to get started? I will teach how to make the frog and then I will show you how to make small changes to make the dragon, fox and duck.

Then we sew the front of the head. The front of the head consists of three pieces. Bring the two right sides together and sew. Then place the third, right sides together and sew.

Set aside. Fold the ears and sew them. The reason I use two pieces for each ear is to strengthen the ears so they stand better on their own.

Next, right sides together, pin the inside of the mouth to the top of the mouth. sew

Place the head piece inside the tube. Making sure the mouth is tucked in, align the outer edges with the edge of the tube. I’m trying to line up the body seam in the middle of the back of the head.

This is a little sewing acrobatics to sew, so take your time and read as needed. Be sure not to catch the other side of the tube in your seam as you sew. Turn right out. Save

Place some Poly-Fil on the top of the head (leaving the mouth open to make room for your hands.) Save

The fox is basically the same as the frog, except the ears are shaped differently, and you need to add the white accent pieces to the top of the mouth and ears. Just sew them up and continue as you did above. Save

First, double up your wings and spikes and sew the two layers together (just like you did for the ears). Then you need to insert the dragon’s wings and back spikes into the grooves. You do this by making a sandwich, like this: Save

When you turn it inside out, your dragon puppet body should look like the one shown below. Continue attaching the head as described for the frog. Save

The duck is probably the simplest of all puppets to make. Ignore the ears, and instead tuck in the “hair” pieces when you sew the forehead. Just be careful that only the ends of the hair are in your braids, and not the sides. It’s not too difficult, is it? Save Save

That’s it! I show you how to make all four puppets. I’m not challenging you to come up with your own variations. How about a cat? or dog? or maybe even a unicorn? Oh yes…my kids especially liked the unicorns!!!
