If you want a symmetrical, structured wreath, cut your branches into 4- to 6-inch sections. If you want a wild, “natural-looking” wreath, cut your branches into various 4- to 8-inch pieces. Sorting your parts into piles by type will help you stay organized once you start assembling.
You are now ready to assemble your DIY wreath! Before diving into the second step and adding the greens, take a moment to wrap the spade wire around the wreath shape several times to secure it. Keep the thread attached to the paddle and place it on the outside of the bead shape.
Then you’re ready to add the greens! Start by taking a sprig of each of your ingredients and making a small “bouquet” in your hand.

Place your “bouquet” on the wire frame, then wrap the wire around the bunch three to five times. Each time you wind the yarn, be sure to give it a significant tug. It’s the tension that holds your crown together. Keep in mind that the greenery and twigs will dry out and shrink during the weeks your wreath will be hanging on your door or wall; So don’t be afraid to give the wire a good tug!
Keep adding curls and wrapping like this. Every now and then, take a step back and lift your crown and see if it feels full and balanced.
It’s easy to focus too much on small details and sometimes miss the big picture. You can always add material by slipping it tightly under a loop of wire, or you can easily cut twigs and leaves to refine and balance your wreath.

When you reach the last curl, simply lift the first curl back, pressing the end of the last curl down. Continue wrapping as before. Once the yarn is secured, go back and test your bead. If necessary, bend a few more branches before the last step.
The final step in making your wreath is tying it. To make a wreath, wrap the wire two or three more times. Cut the wire using the pliers (or your pruning shears if they have a notch for the wire).
Then turn the bead and “thread” the end of the string through the bead frame by wrapping the slack around the metal piece in the frame. Protect the wire by bending the end toward the green so that it does not scratch the door or wall.

Repeat steps adding cones (or any embellishments!) until you achieve the desired look. Design Tip: Cones look great grouped together or scattered throughout a wreath. Anyway, since you’re working with a circle, you’ll want to work with odd numbers. Consider one, three or five pine cones.
