NLE Choppa was born on November 17, 2002 in Memphis, Tennessee to Angeletta Ellis Potts. Choppa started riding freestyle with his friends when he was 14 years old. Finally, he began to take music seriously at the age of 15.

NLE Choppa released his first song in February 2018 under the name YNR Choppa titled No Love Anthem. On July 22 of the same year, he released his debut mixtape entitled No Love the Takeover. In December, Choppa appeared on a cryptic style track from his collective Shotta Fam known as No Chorus Pt. 3. His performance in the video accompanying the song was superb, making him an instant online sensation.
Inspired by his growing popularity, NLE Choppa continues to work on more music projects. His first single was Shotta Flow, released in January 2019. The video for the song garnered over 10 million views in the first month.
In May 2019, Shotta Flow peaked at number 96 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song later peaked at number 36 before being certified platinum by the RIAA.

A month after the release of Shotta Flow, NLE Choppa followed up with the song’s sequel titled Shotta Flow 2. Shotta Flow 2 was also well received, with the song’s video garnering over 20 million views in its first two months.
After the success of Shotta Flow 2, NLE Choppa became the subject of a bidding war. Reports indicate that some labels were willing to pay up to $3 million to sign him. However, he rejected all these proposals. Instead, he signed with distribution company UnitedMasters in a deal that would allow him to keep his major records and publish.
NLE Choppa released several singles in the coming months including Capo, Birdboy, Blocc Is Hot and Free YoungBoy. Free YoungBoy’s music video has since garnered over 19 million views on YouTube.
