Is Coconut A Nut Allergen – There is a lot of confusion about the difference between peanuts and tree nuts. They may look similar, but they are so different! Peanuts are legumes (edible seeds that grow in pods), and you guessed it, tree nuts are hard-shelled nuts that grow on trees. We covered this topic in the previous blog post!
There is also a lot of confusion surrounding the mighty coconut🥥. They are very difficult to classify – they are sweet and eaten like a fruit, but have a hard outer shell that must be opened like a nut. It also contains the word walnut.
Is Coconut A Nut Allergen
If we talk about the plant, the coconut is actually a dry, fibrous plant with a single seed. A drupe is a fruit with a rock-hard outer layer surrounding the seed. The term comes from the word drupa, which means ripe olives. The coconut, along with all the kernels, consists of three layers: the exocarp (the outer layer), the mesocarp (the fleshy middle layer), and the endocarp (the tough, wood-like layer surrounding the seed).
Hidden Sources Of Tree Nuts
Is coconut considered a tree nut? After all, “nut” is part of the word. Technically, a nut is defined as a single-seeded fruit. So with this loose definition, coconut can also be classified as a nut. However, coconut lacks many of the proteins that people with tree nut allergies have, so many people with tree nut allergies can safely eat coconut without having an allergic reaction (including our CEO!). For a complete list of all foods considered to be tree nuts by the FDA (including coconut), see #25 on this list.
In 2010, the journal Pediatric Allergy and Immunology published a study delving into the relationship between sesame, coconut, and tree nut allergies in children. Researchers found that children with peanut or tree nut allergies are not more likely to develop a coconut allergy.
According to a 2017 study, reports of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated coconut allergy are rare. However, although the incidence of coconut allergy is low, reactions can be severe – and several reported cases have included anaphylaxis.
It is important to note that because the FDA classifies coconut as an allergen, it must be labeled as such in all FDA-regulated packaged foods. For information about food allergy labeling laws, see our post on the topic.
What Are “may Contain” Allergy Statements And What They Mean For You
It is important to speak with your doctor/allergist if you have any concerns about a possible coconut allergy. They will be able to advise you on the best course of action.
Importantly, while the FDA treats coconut as a tree nut for labeling purposes, do not assume that restaurants treat coconut as a tree nut. If you’re concerned you may have a coconut allergy, it’s a good idea to specifically mention this ingredient when eating out, and take the same precautions you would with any other food allergy.
We want to give you some fun facts about coconuts that you may not know – these facts were definitely new information to us!
Coconut is often called the “Tree of Life” because every piece of coconut can be used. Coconut trees can produce beverages, fiber, food, fuel, tools, musical instruments, and more!
Tree Nut Allergy Symptoms And Treatment
The oldest reference to coconuts appears to come from an Egyptian traveler named Cosmas from the fifth century AD. Scholars believe his reference to “coconut” was coconut.
The coconut is a perennial plant that bears fruit continuously 12-13 times each year, for up to 60-70 years, and produces between 30 and 75 coconuts each year.
When there was a shortage of intravenous fluids during World War II and the Vietnam War, doctors used coconut water as an alternative.

Peanut allergy, coconut allergy, coconut, is coconut a tree nut, is coconut a tree nut, is coconut considered a tree nut, coconut allergy, can you be allergic to coconut, how many people are allergic From coconut, coconut allergy, tree nut, tree nut allergy Comment: Three nuts (and peanuts) are at the center of food allergies these days. These are the types of allergies we read about the most, and they’re also what many food manufacturers voluntarily label these days. I want to be very clear with this statement:
You may be allergic to one, some, or all of the nuts. No one is the same. For some, an allergy to one nut causes a cross-allergic reaction to other nuts. For others, they can eat a lot of nuts. Some people, based on their previous tests and reactions, are advised to avoid all nuts for safety reasons. Again, no two are the same and you need to work with your medical team to make sure you are doing what is best for you and your baby.
Underrated, Delicious Nut Free Snacks
Nuts can be on the same equipment for many canned foods, and even bulk ingredients. It has a lot to do with processing facilities. It is not uncommon for seed and chocolate plants to also process nuts. Tree nuts are known to be used as flavoring agents in alcohol as well, so drink with caution.
If you have a severe allergy to nuts, you can’t escape contacting the companies. Even the flour company should be contacted if they also produce almond flour. Multiple beverage companies must be contacted as equipment is shared. These days, everyone wants to add superfoods and energy-dense ingredients to their drinks. The important point here is that most small companies cluster together, which means sharing equipment with other manufacturers. Even if their product doesn’t contain nuts, another company’s formula might.
If one ice cream company produces another nutty flavor, make sure it is made in a separate line. In addition, most bakeries process nuts in some way.
If the label says “Made in a tree nut-free facility” that’s great. Here’s what it actually means:
Growers Want Coconuts Off The Fda List Of Major Allergens
This product is manufactured in a facility where tree nuts are not permitted. However, not every raw ingredient necessarily falls under this statement.
In other words, if I obtain seeds from a facility that processes tree nuts and bring them to my tree nut-free facility, there may still be traces of tree nuts. This exact reason is why we choose to support allergy-aware and allergy-free companies. Buying components from these companies tends to be superior to others.
It’s a very complex situation, and we talk about it a lot in this resource on how to contact companies. Not all companies have this problem, and some companies have solutions to prevent cross-contact with tree nuts (and other major allergens). However, we’ve found that the high volume a company gets (especially if bought with a big name) lacks ingredient transparency. It is very difficult to talk to them and get the information you are looking for.
If you’ve read our story, you know that we live in a unique home. We have found that trusting selected allergy-focused companies has been beneficial for our family. You must make wise decisions based on your family’s needs. If you discover that someone is having “fake reactions” to foods that should be safe, you need to check the foods they are eating. Start by eliminating foods that are prepared using shared equipment and to which they are allergic. When we made the big leap, everything improved dramatically. If taking this step doesn’t make any difference, it’s time to check for new allergies/intolerances/conditions.
Is A Coconut A Fruit?
Most almond extract manufacturers get the extract from stone fruits such as peaches and apricots. You can contact companies to learn more about this topic. However, there may be some cross-reactivity due to the common plant family. I have never met someone who was allergic to almonds and used almond extract from other fruits. The general consensus is to avoid the ingredient.
Pink pepper is not the same as black, green and white pepper. It is known to cause allergic reactions in those who are allergic to cashews. Although a reaction is not guaranteed to occur, it is recommended that those with a cashew allergy avoid pink pepper.
Pink peppercorns are sometimes referred to as Brazilian pepper, rose pepper, and Christmas berry. It is not a true pepper and is considered part of the cashew family.
Keto, paleo, and vegan diets are based on nuts. This is one of the reasons why we develop Paleo and Vegan recipes that exclude nuts. For these types of diet, nuts are seen as a great source of energy and, in some cases, a great synthetic alternative.
The Best Food Allergy Alternatives To Avoid 8 Common Allergens
Cereals and granola can contain nuts. When it comes to grains, there are many nut-free options available. But if you have a severe allergy to nuts, make sure they are not made in shared equipment that contains nuts. two
