According to the song’s cover, Cole made the record while struggling to find motivation. During his mission to prepare something new, he simply went to YouTube and searched “J. Cole type beat.” The first instrumental he found was created by producer Bvtman. After being inspired by the beat, Cole allowed the producer to play the song exclusively on his YouTube channel as a thank you.
“This song should be on your channel and serve as a thank you to you and all the producers who cook and share their work with the world,” Cole wrote to Btwman, who used the message as the song’s cover. “There are a million artists out there right now, just like me, hungry and looking every day for something to push a word, a melody, a chorus, a verse, a fist, a way to vent or a way to cut.”

“On a day when I couldn’t find much motivation, I looked for something to inspire me,” Cole continued. “Out of curiosity, I typed ‘J. Cole like beat’ into YouTube. Yours was the first one I saw. I pressed play, focused and wrote this down. But I don’t want to limit myself to music anymore.

The song arrives more than a week after Cole cleared his Instagram to make room for something new. It’s the first solo track he’s released since contributing to Dreamville’s D-Day mixtape last April. This also generates more excitement behind its long-awaited sequel to 2021’s The Off-Season.
