Additionally, many Anser-style putters from other manufacturers—after Solheim’s patent expired in 1984—produced a number of copycat putters that continue to this day.
Solheim tried his hand at golf in 1953 and tried to lower his scores by using what he called “the simple laws of physics and mechanics” to create a more efficient putter. He had some early success with his 1-A model, but it was the Unser that became the golf standard for putters.

Karsten stammered, “Not a name for a putter, and besides, the name doesn’t suit the foot.” Lewis held his ground and said, “Leave the W.” After Karsten could not come up with a better idea, the name was used.
Originally called a “plumber’s dream” because of its unusual hosel design, the original club also had some durability issues. The first putters were made of copper—a very soft metal. One day Solheim caught Arnold Palmer on the putting green and gave him one. Palmer looked at her and told Solheim that the face was blank. As it turned out, someone fell into the club and disfigured the face. From then on, Solheim decided to use high strength manganese bronze.

Although Solheim lost to Palmer, Unser impressed everyone. Archer was one of the best putters on tour and won his first major at the 1969 Masters. Gary Blair and Tony Jacklin were other big names who used Unser early on. Then Scott Verplank used his Unser for more than 22 consecutive years, and Tiger Woods used the Unser as a junior and college player, playing the Unser 2 during the 1998 PGA Tour season. At the club’s peak in the mid-1970s, more than half of those who played on the PGA Tour were Answers. The club also dominated retail sales. The victory came at a crucial time for Solheim.
