Keyboard Shortcut Symbols – Using punctuation correctly is essential to making your text look professional – but do you wish you didn’t have to scroll down the punctuation palette looking for your chosen character? If this is a familiar problem (and you’re working in a full-featured app like Word), it’s worth trying ALT codes. To help you get started, I’ve listed the points I think are most useful in scientific writing.
Most of the shortcuts I’ve listed below use the numeric keypad – all you have to do is use the ‘Number Lock’ function, hold ‘ALT’ and type the digits to get the icon. (or ‘glyph’. use) the correct words).

For many years, the way to get a Greek letter was to enter a Roman letter, then laboriously change the font to a Symbol (‘a’ for alpha, ‘b’ for beta, and others). If you’re constantly writing the letter ‘O’ or ‘o’ and rewriting it – or digging up the Roman male ordinal sign (º) – you should save time by clicking on the correct one.
This symbol for ‘micro’ is in every way the same as the Greek letter mu in every font I’ve seen (see above), but which code you choose will affect do your work using units like ‘µm’ instead of ‘um’.

Special Alt Characters
If you don’t want to mess around using the computer code * (or use the letter ‘x’), this button is what you need.
Just like a quotation mark without a curly tail, this symbol is rarely used outside of math – but it’s important inside!
Astronomers are also used to double primes, but they mean inches – so, for those of us who are tempted to use double quotes, you can increase your marks (at least between at the benchmarks) using the real thing. .

By the way, if you find that the ALT symbol does not give you the correct symbol, it may be because it is not encoded in the font you are using, or you are using a platform that is not support for ALT tags.
