They cherish the relationship they have with their seven children and seven grandchildren. They know that communication is the foundation of relationships with loved ones. They also realize that the ability to communicate is not something that is given to every child.
Three of the Lacertes’ grandchildren receive speech language services at the Callier Center. At age 2, one of their granddaughters joined Talking Toddlers, a spoken language program that improves communication among children.

“He was very upset when he couldn’t communicate,” Joyce said. “I’ve seen firsthand how communication affects behavior when you can’t tell what’s going on—whether it’s hunger, happiness or sadness.”
After being diagnosed with autism at age 3, the Lacertes’ granddaughter attended Early Classes, a classroom-based speech, language and communication program for children with autism.
“I take her to public speaking classes three to four days a week,” Joyce said. “In the beginning he could say ‘music’ when he wanted me to play something in the car. By the time the year was over at Callier, he could actually ask for a song.

After the morning class, Lacertes’ grandson was enrolled in preschool. Today she is in first grade and loves to read and sing.
“The fact that Callier has resources available to children at such a young age – life changing!” Larry said.
The Lacerts’ experience at Callier prompted them to establish the Joyce and Larry Lacerte Foundation for Pediatric Patient Care with a $250,000 donation. The foundation will ensure that children in need receive clinical treatment.

“In the waiting room, I heard the parents talking and I realized that not everyone has insurance that will cover the speech program,” Joyce said. “Neither Larry nor I grew up with a lot of things, and to be in a position to give it back now I think is great.”
“The more you give, the more you get,” Larry said. “It is not an obligation; it’s a gift.”
“It’s been a blessing to our family,” Larry said. “There are many more smiles and laughs to see our grandchildren being able to communicate!”
