Leaders Lead From The Front

Leaders Lead From The Front – Some leaders emerge in the most difficult times, inspiring a whole new generation of leaders. These leaders don’t choose, they are chosen. It’s as if they shaped themselves and as if they were shaped by their experiences to lead in moments and situations where most would run away or collapse.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy enters. The former actor and comedian became a wartime symbol of courage and leadership. When Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine, most assumed that the smaller country would not put up much of a fight. If that were not enough, the much less experienced leader Zelenskyy would have fled his homeland to safety in the West.

Zelenskyy chose a very different approach to leadership that we should all learn from. He chose to lead from the front lines and this inspired millions of people around the world, including his fellow Ukrainians.

Not only did he refuse an offer to flee, he told the US: “The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a road,” In a video released last Saturday morning, Zelenskyy revealed that he is still in Kiev. “I am here. We are not laying down our arms. We are going to defend our country because our arms are the truth, and our truth is that this is our country, our country, our children and we are going to defend all of this.”

Ukrainian or not, Zelenskyy is brave and daring to stay with his people and fight on the front lines, risking his own life.

There is no telling what the next few weeks, months or years will bring to Ukraine, Russia and the world. However, the leadership doctrine is clear:

A leader’s willingness to be on the front lines is inspiring and powerful because it spurs people to action.

This does not mean that every leadership situation requires the president of the state to fight on the front lines or the CEO of a company to work in the weeds. But their willingness to do so demonstrates their commitment to the mission and their people.

In Building the Best, I wrote about five unique leadership styles, and the “elevated style” is the best. I’ve never been more confident that leaders whose style is Elevate will be ready to lead from the front lines. When leaders make bold decisions like dressing up, working long hours, or solving big problems with their people, it makes them authentic and trustworthy.

The 6 Characteristics Of Bad Leadership

When leaders make the bold decision to lead from the front lines, it makes them authentic and inspiring.

When former US President Donald Trump was asked about Zelenskly, he said: “You never know courage. Some people think they’re brave, but they’re not brave. Other people don’t think they’re very brave, and they step up. You never know until you are tested. Zelenskyy has been tested at the highest level and has shown great leadership and courage so far.”

Whether you consider yourself brave or not, one way to increase your courage is to think of others instead of yourself. This is exactly how the best leaders think because they know that they work for their people, not the other way around.

There are some great leadership lessons in his words. The most famous quote is “What we do in life echoes in eternity.” It reminded people of the impact of their mission and led them to the “why” of the battle.

There is another quote from his words to the people that I want us to look at. These are the words…

“Hold the line. STAY WITH ME. If you find yourself alone, riding through green fields with the sun in your face, don’t worry; for you are in Elysium, and you are already dead!”

Then, as you watch him lead the men down the hill into battle, you hear him shout the words again mid-battle… “Stay with me!”

He doesn’t say these words while watching the battle from the hill. He is not saying these words from the back of the team. He does not speak these words through the captain whom he has appointed to lead the attack. He does not speak these words from the safety of the fortress wall.

Effective leaders know that their teams look to them for inspiration and guidance. And so they lead first of all with their actions. They show the way by showing the way. Talking will only improve you as a leader. Self-talk is what allows you to lead effectively. When you do this, your team will follow you everywhere.

The basic message conveyed by this image is that true leaders are always forward, pulling and leading, where “bosses” just sit comfortably at their desks, shout orders and make their teams pull all the weight (he also sometimes uses this image to show the difference between “managers ” and “leader”).

While I understand the message the image is trying to convey, I feel that it is a bit too simplistic and not a true representation of how real leaders lead or where they lead from. It also doesn’t match my background in managing production teams.

In today’s hyperfluid and fast-paced work environment where vision, strategy and tactics; goals and priorities are constantly changing – companies must remain agile to adapt to these changing conditions. For this to happen, organizations need a more flexible leadership model – leader-leader or co-leadership.

In a typical organizational structure, power and leadership are top-down and 1:N. This, in my opinion, creates a number of problems. To name a few:
