Travelers have no shortage of places to stay. Abandoning the traditional route of booking a hotel room, many people are turning to Airbnb: an online community marketplace (aka “home sharing”) where people can find a variety of short-term accommodations around the world. List and book. We decided to compare the average hotel costs and Airbnb rates in 22 cities around the world to see how the deals stack up. Read on to see what we discovered.
London Airbnb Vs Hotel
Comparing hotel and Airbnb rates in the US (as well as in Toronto, Canada’s largest city) yields some interesting results. Airbnb prices are more competitive in seven of the 12 cities we tested. Overall, Airbnb is winning the price war in the Pacific and Northwest, while hotels are doing better in the South.
Renting A Vacation Home Through A Hotel Chain
In some cities the price difference is significant. For example, in Toronto, a hotel room costs about 50% more than an Airbnb stay. However, in Austin, the average Airbnb rate is 57% higher than hotel bookings. Interestingly, Austin is home to HomeAway – one of Airbnb’s main competitors.
Then we compared hotel and Airbnb rates in popular cities in Europe and Australia. Europe is a hub for Airbnb properties, with the majority of properties there – and this is reflected in our results. In eight of the nine cities we looked at, the average Airbnb rate is lower than the hotel rate.
In many places, including Berlin, Madrid, Paris and Vienna, the average cost of a hotel reservation is almost double that of an Airbnb stay. And in Sydney—the only Australian city we studied—the average hotel rate is about 28% higher than an Airbnb rental.
However, the case is different in Barcelona: on average, Airbnb rates are 81% higher than hotel costs in Spain’s most international city. Barcelona is a very popular tourist destination and high demand can drive up prices. In addition, the city needs a special permit to advertise apartments and will deal with the violators.
Airbnb Or Hotel ?
The above diagram shows the difference in the cost of staying in a hotel and renting an Airbnb in different cities. Hotels are cheaper in six of the 22 cities we surveyed, and Airbnb rentals are cheaper in 16 cities. Prices range from a few dollars to more than $100. In Barcelona and Austin, the average hotel stay is more than $100 cheaper than an Airbnb rental. But in London and Paris, Airbnb rates are more than $100 cheaper than staying in hotels. And in New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles, there’s less than a $10 difference between the two.
Airbnb listings offer a variety of overnight rental accommodations. Booking a private room means that you will have your own bedroom, but you will share other parts of the house, such as the kitchen, with the owners. The average price is around $75, but you can find private rooms for less than $50 in Madrid, Berlin and Toronto.
If you are willing to share accommodation (including a bedroom) with someone else, the average price is $63 – about $10 less than a private room. The best prices for shared rooms are in Berlin, Sydney and Vienna.
If youare traveling with a group, renting an entire house or apartment may be your best bet. The average nightly price is $183, but in Berlin, Vienna and Madrid you can find houses for rent for less than $100. No matter what type of accommodation you are looking for, when booking with a home sharing site, it is important to carefully choose, ask lots of questions of the host, and always put your safety first.

Whether you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime vacation or an annual visit with out-of-town friends, it’s a good idea to shop around to get the best lodging deals. As our study shows, depending on your destination, you are more likely to buy an Airbnb rental.
However, Airbnbs are not always perfect. Your experience may depend on the hospitality of an individual host rather than an entire staff – like a hotel. Whatever you choose, remember to check out cheap bus tickets so you can spend your vacation doing exactly what you came for – seeing the world.
