1. The screens on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro have rounded corners at the top. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen diagonal is 14.2 inches and 16.2 inches (the actual display area is smaller).
3. Actual value of 69.6 watt-hours (14-inch model) or 99.6 watt-hours (16-inch model). Testing conducted in September 2021 with pre-production 14-inch MacBook Pro systems with M1 Pro, 8-core CPU, 14-core GPU, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD; and pre-production 16-inch MacBook Pro systems with M1 Pro, 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. The wireless web test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing 25 popular web pages with screen brightness set to 8 clicks from the bottom. The movie playback test in the TV app measures battery life by playing HD 1080p content with the screen brightness set to 8 clicks from the bottom. Battery life depends on usage and configuration. The response from the staff was quick and, as far as I can tell, universal. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many colleagues legitimately excited about a specific new feature. MagSafe is back. Not the iPhone version (not to say it’s not without its own charms) – the original. Laptop version. A version that Apple unceremoniously abandoned in 2017, with the arrival of an all-USB-C/Thunderbolt MacBook.
Apple Macbook Pro 14 Inch (2021) Review
This is, I fully realize, an odd place to begin a lengthy review of a new Pro-focused laptop. MagSafe is hardly the most important arrival to the MacBook Pro 2021. That distinction almost certainly belongs to the new M1 Pro and Max chips. But the proprietary contact is an important microcosm. It’s a crowd-pleaser for long-time devotees that was interrupted during the Port Fest and Port Famine.
The new model isn’t a sink laptop — Apple doesn’t actually make sink units. But in addition to the new features, it reveals that the company is bringing back some old favorites that many in the community no doubt feared were long gone. As the MacBook evolved, features came and went. “Courage,” as the company famously put it, when it released the headphone jack, back in 2016. It’s one of many cases where Apple was clearly ahead of the curve. But that’s what courage is all about. It doesn’t always end as you expect.
And we as consumers demand change while complaining about it. We are hard to please. Sometimes, as in the case of the headphone jack and the hard drive before it, mainstream consumer use catches up, and many people barely miss these features. Another time the manufacturer was in a hurry. The transition from USB-A to USB-C was clearly a sign of inevitable progress. But losing MagSafe is painful.
Fortunately, the plug-in is back — in an improved form. It is joined by an SD card slot (support for the SD 4.0 standard, UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC cards), an HDMI port and a number of function keys (replacing the beleaguered Touch Bar), which have all but disappeared from current Mac lineup (with last year’s 13-inch MacBook Pro serving as the last line of resistance). There are three USB-C ports on the card — down from four on the 13-incher. You never want to lose any ports, but many will no doubt see the return of HDMI and MagSafe as a fair compromise. Your mileage may vary.
Macbook Pro 14 (2021) Retro Series Skins
Apple has made a concerted effort to win back the creative professionals who have been the foundation of its computer line for years. And in many ways, the new Pro models represent the purest manifestation of that. They’re powerful, bulky machines that look to the future of the Mac, while bringing back some hits from the past.
With a year to go, it seems pretty likely that last year’s 13-inch MacBook Pro will be written off as something of a curiosity, like the 2016 MacBook before it. The device is currently available as a 13-inch sibling to the recently announced 14- and 16-inch models. It fits strangely. It’s true that the 13-inch MacBook has more DNA in common with the Air it launched with — the MacBook Pro Lite or MacBook Air+, perhaps. It was clear then that the difference was not as pronounced as we expected between the two models, and the arrival of this year’s Pro models only served to highlight the gap.
The heart of the product is, of course, Apple’s latest silicone. We expected a new chip before this month’s Unleashed event, but Apple managed to surprise us by releasing two, the M1 Pro and the M1 Max. Both are effectively improved versions of the M1 (built on the same 5nm architecture), and for most users in most scenarios the differences between the two variants will be negligible. Heck, for most users in most scenarios, a plain old M1 will do the job. But the main demo that Apple is looking for here is not the majority of users. It’s a class of creators, people who regularly push their systems to the limit with 3D rendering, 8K video editing, and other activities that might have seemed nearly impossible on a laptop decades ago.
After Apple introduced the Pro and Max, the immediate question was how the company would split the two chips. Ultimately, I think the company did the right thing here and offered the Max as an upgrade for both systems, priced at $200. These things add up quickly, of course, but welcome to the Apple.com shopping cart. The company shipped the M1 Max with a 10-core PU and 32-core GPU, 64GB of RAM and 2TB of storage.

Memory options range from 16 to 64GB (the latter only available with the Max) and 512GB all the way up to 8TB. This system costs $4100 as configured. Step up to 8TB of storage and you’re all the way up to $5,899 (opting for the 16-inch can push the needle over $6,000). That’s a $3,900 premium over the entry-level price of $1,999.
Benchmark gains confirm the jump in specifications. GeekBench’s single-core test for Apple Silicon didn’t see much improvement, going from 1711 on the MacBook Pro 2020 to 1781, but the multi-core score saw an impressive jump from 7549 to 12674.
The GFXBench Metal graphics test simultaneously shows off the new GPU, jumping from 3490 frames (at 54.3 fps) to 7717.5 in the Aztec demo, and from 4981 frames (77.4 fps) to 17981 (279.6 fps ) in the offline version screen. The system still lags behind some Nvidia GPUs in the former, but outperforms others impressively in the latter. What may be most significant among these numbers is the fact that Apple can see good performance while using significantly less power than most competitors.
The idea that the system doesn’t heat up is overhyped – the bottom of the aluminum case gets scorched, but the truth is you really have to push this system to get those fans to start. Battery life works well in this thing. I managed to squeeze out 17:29 hours of Apple TV+ playback on one charge (the new Velvet Underground documentary is good. I know because I watched it A LOT). The reintroduction of MagSafe also provides fast charging, taking the system from zero to 50% battery in half an hour (with a 96W or 140W adapter). The system can still be charged via one of the three USB-C ports (perfect for those times when you inevitably leave your own plug at home), though not as quickly, at a maximum of 100W.

The MagSafe connector comes with a fancy new braided cable, but otherwise looks and works remarkably like a quick release.
